Some of you are probably wondering why I'm amused. The answer is simple; I look up at the annoying advert banner on the forums here and what do I find?
An ad for ChristianMingle.com
Yes, it amuses me that the ad-bots only look at keywords and not content when selecting an advertisement for a website. A bot looks at a website that's about poking fun at fundamentalist religions and wants to hook us up with people from said religions? It would be more appropriate if it was for atheist singles, but then the bot would have to look at more than just keywords.
Shouldn't they either make the ad-bots smarter or, better yet, get rid of them?

That could be strategic, though, maybe they think we can be swayed over to their side with the prospect of some Christian pussy...

Or, you could just use FireFox and get the AdBlock Plus addon. I don't see any banner ads.

If they get rid of the keyword adbots, how am I supposed to accidentally find apologists websites? Go look for them?

Perish the thought.
No, I don't think smarter ad-bots are really a possibility right now. Natural language processing is still a research area, particularly in the sense of semantics (i.e. meaning) and pragmatics (i.e. context). I think we still have about another 5 years before that stuff is possible and 10 years before it's really viable. That's to say nothing of the ethical concerns of an ad-bot that actually understands what you're writing.
Ads aren't going to go away, and even if the current method of targeted ads is not 100% successful, it's still better (from the advertisers' point of view) than totally random ads.

I've been amused by the ad choices on Proboards, as well, but that's just because they tend to go back and forth between adverts for Christian dating and other Christian-aimed sites, and adverts for ANTI-religious sites. It's funny. XD

Honestly I could care less what they advertise here or how they do it...It is friggin free! I'm not looking the gift horse in the mouth just now, although I would find ads linking to tentacle anime sex more...err...stimulating.

Even better: I was on RelTol, reading pages about new religious movements, and I kept getting ads that said, "Christian Mother makes $5000/month from her home!" This, despite the fact that I am neither Christian, nor a mother, am not searching for jobs online, and was reading about decidedly non-Christian faiths. ...Gods dam nmit, it's doing it again: the text ad above reads "Christian Mom Makes $5K/M Christian Mother makes $5K a month from the comfort of her home. allaboutgod.com" I may never escape it. EDIT: ausadorBelieve me, you're not the only one. *ahem* TENTACLE PORN! TENTACLE PORN! TENTACLE PORN! That should do it.

I don't pay attention to any ads, but the other night one for a Christian Prayer site poped up.
Now all I see is the Christian work at home one.

I third the tentacle porn ads. Though I guess I wouldn't see them cause I have AdBlock Plus installed...

I, too, cast my vote in favor of tentacle-porn ads.
BTW, that's a lovely new avatar you've got there, Oriet. As far as cartoon characters go, I've always had a bit of a thing for the Major. ;D

I have yet to see the tentacle rape ads. I have had the more common "Christian Singles" and "Do you regret voting for Obama" ads.
