So, I'm off to San Francisco for a work related conference. I fly out tomorrow and I'll be there through Sunday morning. Anybody ever been before? Any ideas about what to see/do?

Have a sour dough bowl of Clam Chowder at Fisherman's Wharf. Throw your leftovers to the sea lions.
Rent a car, drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and up into the Marin Valley for a wine tasting.
Visit City Lights Bookstore and buy a copy of something by Jack Kerouac.
Visit China Town and Lombard Street for sure.
Whatever you do - WALK. It's worth the work out.
I love San Fran. Probably one of my favorite cities on the planet.

All the cool stuff is on the north side of town - north of Market Street with the Bay on the East side and Golden Gate Park/Haight Ashbury on the West.
If you stay north of Market pretty much anything between those boundaries is worth looking at - Lombard Street, the Wharf, the Embarcadero, Union Square, Chinatown, the cablecars, etc.

I'm staying at the Hilton around Powell Street (I think the actual street is O'Farrell, but the BART let's me off at Powell).
It's for the 4C's--you coming?

I wish - our budget is the suxxors...
O'Farrel is in the middle of everything I've listed - right next to Union Square on the bottom edge of the more touristy stuff.
Remember - Chinatown and Hippyville to the West. Water to the East and North. Shopping all around. Have fun. I'm jealous.

Well, all this fun comes with a professional price tag. So, I have to go in and look like somebody amongst a bunch of other people who are trying to do the same thing. You know how conferences can go sometimes--all about the ego. Mainly because the stakes are so low.

DV my advise is ask some of the people that live in the area what you should do/see.

Have a sour dough bowl of Clam Chowder at Fisherman's Wharf. Oh hells yes. Do that. ...I've lived so close to there for so long and yet I don't have much advice on what to see. Go to Chinatown, they have lots of cheap stuff there. Just realize that it's cheap for a reason =P. Once they gave me an empty CD case at one of the stores.... I don't know where you're from originally, but SF has a really heavily Asian population, so there are a lot of different types of what could be considered exotic foods (though having grown up in the region it seems pretty normal to me). If you're from a less diverse place, it's awesome to go around trying other countries' food. Oh yeah! I don't know if you have time or if they're doing them this time of year, but there are whalewatching companies. Go get a ticket, they take you out on a boat. There are often other cool things there too. And the beaches/piers have awesome stuff living on or near them too. I guess that's all I can remember off the top of my head... have fun whatever you decide to do. It'll be awesome.

Stay away from the Tenderloin, anything South of Market (unless it's AT&T Park in the middle of baseball season), and Hunter's Point (the first neighborhood of the City that you see, assuming you fly in from SFO). All the tourist sites are between the Embarcadero, Van Ness, and Market, and I make it a point to go the In-N-Out Burger at Fisherman's Wharf every time I go up there.
If you're renting a car, I suggest going to Marin County and go on some wine tasting tour, or go across the bay to Jack London Square in Oakland and then do a lot of "recreational activities" in Berkeley.

San Fran is a beautiful city. Lombard street, Fisherman's Wharf, if it's not too foggy, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and go to Salalitos (sp?) What a great place, hippeis and restaurants. Too bad it's to early for baseball, the new stadium on the water is beautiful, we saw Barry Bonds hit a homerun there. Wine country up the road after crossing Golden Gate Bridge. Have a great time, I'm jealous.
