Fundy Xians claim to have no religion, don't they? Just askin... Yes, I have seen that stated by fundies before. But the way this study is laid out, it appears they asked with which group they associated themselves. If a person were asked,, "Are you religious?", I could see a fundie answering "No" since they (falsely) claim that Christianity isn't a religion. But if asked what church or denomination they belong to, it isn't likely they would say "I'm not religious." For the study results to be broken down the way it is, the question of church or religious affiliation had to come up. And as we know, fundies are damn proud of the fact they go to church. Just sayin'...  |

Interesting data, though. Any research on Canadian stats? The contrast might be interesting. Lots and lots of Catholics here in the great white north, but a lot less fundies.

To say that I lost my religion would be incorrect, since losing something implies that one actually had it in the first place.

Well, I would say that a lot of credit for the decline in religion has to do with the religious themselves. For over thirty years, a tiny minority in the sea of christianity that is America has bullied and pushed its way into the heart of American politics, pushing the constitution to the very edge of legality. They have pushed their agenda, aided and abetted by the GOP, who considers them as their "base".
Meanwhile, we all stood aghast as we watched this happen. The wave of religious zeal that followed in the wake of the chaos of the 1960's and early 1970's left us all a bit numb, and religion exploded for a time. That time has passed. We stared collectively into the abyss that the GOP pandering to their "base" had brought us to, and collectively said: Enough.
Religion is declining because people are afraid of it, finally. At some subliminal level, the ultimate response of rational human beings to moralistic, anti-democratic, even anti-American rhetoric, disguised as religion, is fear. Irrationality should induce some level of fear in rational beings. We stepped back from that abyss, slightly.
We have a long way to go.

Glad someone posted this. This was the best news I heard all day.
Extremists and radicals kill their own message with their delivery. Religionists weren't happy with just following their delusions and keeping it to themselves, they used it as a springboard to be pushy assholes and to usurp power and illegally influence politics. Religion is associated more and more with self-immolating monks, suicide bombers, child molesting priests, greedy lying evangelical hypocrites, abortion clinic bombings and people flying planes full of people into buildings full of people. and it seems that while religion itself is down, the fastest growing are the muslims and the evangelicals, two of the most radical faces of religion.
I remember a guy in Religulous who said that he forsaw religion ending in 100 years. As wonderful as that sounds, that is incredibly wishful thinking. People are too scared and too stupid to let go of something so deep-seated and so illogical that quickly. But this is a good sign of a trend that is moving in the right direction.

Well hopefully this is the start of a trend leading to the ousting of the religious right in America and it's government. It always confused me how they have such a large influence there when the constitution advocates separation of church and state.
