Ok, I should have worded it a little differently. I was not just talking about the throwing of the rocks, but the whole set of behaviors. Yes, that should have been clarified. As for the assumption, I was basing it on the use of the word "spontaneous" and its context. If such an assumption is indeed unwarranted, I apologize.

How exactly are the qualifiers bad? If he doesn't know for certain, then he shouldn't say with certainty. Using "think", "might", and "probably" is the appropriate terminology here. Agreed. Another thing to consider is if Santino is a fluke in that something external clued him in or if other chimps also premeditate their actions. Cite your souces and give me some examples. Ironbite-cause that statement makes NO FUCKING SENSE WHATSOEVER!

So...Where is he observing these behaviours, then?

So...Where is he observing these behaviours, then? You keep assuming that Santini needs to have observed a behaviour before he can perform it.

This thread is as exciting as those in which -- reacting to a fundy provocation -- we all cite how high our IQ's are.

Just sticking my nose in because I think there's a misunderstanding there - Schizophonic was asking that question of Skyfire because she disagrees with the idea that Santini may be merely mimicking something he's seen. In other news, I'm slightly amused that Santini is displaying this excellently complex behaviour, yet hasn't really mastered the fine art of the overarm throw.

Ok, I have absolutely no idea why Julian is so angry. Could someone (particularly Julian) please elaborate?

I'm supposing that for the sake of the argument Sky was making about it being a fluke, that he picked it up somewhere. It's basically a "By you [Sky's] logic...." Statement than a statement of belief. I'm pretty sure we're both on the same side, in fact, as I was initially agreeing with you.

I don't think any science has been done to prove any sort of speculation correct or incorrect. The article is very casual, there hasn't been any systematised attempt to acquire information about this particular chimpanzee.
In my opinion, that should be the next step. Find a PhD student or a postgrad and have them get to work!

There have been many studies of chimps in the wild. All this is pretty much known already.
