Ok, I have absolutely no idea why Julian is so angry. Could someone (particularly Julian) please elaborate? Not angry, (except at skyfire's unmitigable and perpetual idiocy showing no bounds!) mildly peeved at. 1/. Fucking idiotic conclusions from a guy with a PhD that would know better if he had actually even remotely studied his subject species. i.e. Bothered to read anyone else's work. 2/. What kind of misrepresented, sensationalist idiocy is required to hop on the radar of what accounts for journalism nowadays. 3/. The fucking obvious being represented as something new, groundbreaking and phenomenal. -it wasn't why I posted the article!- And as for the philosophical thing? Well Bun's noticed it, and it was highlighted in the original post. Basically, the higher primates in particular should be considered as inmates who've committed no crime, not animals in a zoo. Their environment is artificial, cramped - particularly in comparison to their natural range, lacking stimulus and to add insult to injury they get gawped at by kids with an IQ possibly less than theirs all day. It's not a life! As for the life expectancy being higher argument, it's not 100% proven, and for chimpanzees it's as absurdly condescending and insulting as suggesting we should imprison all ghetto blacks or trailer trash because it might raise their life expectancy due to amongst other things institutional health care and a forced diet...

This is why I barely even read the "news" anymore. Ugh.
And what do you know... sky won't take personal responsibility for what he said. Gee whiz, didn't see that coming.

There have been many studies of chimps in the wild. All this is pretty much known already. I think you make a good point because the author sort of shoots himself in the foot with Of course planning has been observed in Chimps and other primates; the higher apes in particular of quite machiavellian and sophisticated in their action. But for me, there can never be enough studies of chimps in the wild or in captivity there is a lot to be explored--unfortunately it requires suites of sophisticatedly designed experiments which obviously, this particular one is not.

How exactly are the qualifiers bad? If he doesn't know for certain, then he shouldn't say with certainty. Using "think", "might", and "probably" is the appropriate terminology here. Agreed. Another thing to consider is if Santino is a fluke in that something external clued him in or if other chimps also premeditate their actions. The hell? From where? did they sit him down in front of a tv every night and make him watch murder she wrote or something? did the zookeepers show him how to form rocks and toss them?
