As implied in the title of this thread, I'm somewhat of a music nut. And by "somewhat", I mean that I have two enormous wish-lists for music that I want to buy, one for metal and one for progressive rock (progressive metal goes on the metal list), totaling a little less than 1,800 albums, and I refuse to illegally download anything. Does anyone else need to have music with them everywhere they go and find it more compelling than any other subject of conversation? Has anyone else been called a "walking encyclopedia" (in my case, it was by my dad) of their favorite genre of music? (O, my poor, poor dented iPod Classic, how I do mourn for thee, and how I do loathe thy expired warranty. )

I have about 2K albums in iTunes, and it's not comprehensive. When I ported my library over to this computer, I lost a good chunk (For example, half of my Beatles tracks and all my Pink Floyd tracks), and since I don't like illegal downloads, I need to find my albums before I can re-rip them and add them again.
I've got a ton of stuff from a lot of genres. I love rock a lot, so it's probably my biggest genre. I am ridiculously knowledgable.

I like all types of music except metal, rap, and modern country. I can only stomach those from time to time and in small doses from certain artists. My favorites have always been pop and electronica but I also love everything from alternative to motown, etc. If it's good, it's good. I also won't illegally download music. But, I refuse to buy full albums from acts I know are talentless, and thus only download individual songs I like by them. (Because crap recording acts often times DO have some good songs, because of being provided them by good writers and producers.) For example, Britney Spears is utterly talentless and doesn't deserve her career, but that doesn't change the fact that she has recorded several good pop songs. I always get shit from contrived "rockist" music fans for admitting it, but Madonna is my favorite act ever. Really, besides her catalog itself, anyone who can piss of the Vatican and get a #1 single in the same week is fine by me. After her some of my favorites are Roy Orbison and David Bowie among older acts and The White Stripes and The Killers among newer acts.

I attribute my smaller collection of music compared to most people to my almost Dalek-like taste in music. The stuff I listen to nowadays run around the post-rock and shoegazing spectrum, with a smattering of indie, electronic, ambient and progressive. Thus, I 'only' have 10GB of music, and about 30-40 CDs.
On the post-rock spectrum, I love Explosions in the Sky, MONO, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mogwai. Moving away to the shoegazing spectrum there's Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine. Then, getting slightly heavier, are Oceansize and Pelican. And these are the most well-known bands.
Indie side, I'm a massive fan of the Danish band Mew. I also lurve Jens Lekman, and have a smattering of Arcade Fire and Nick Cave.

Indie side, I'm a massive fan of the Danish band Mew. Wow, I thought I was the only person who knew about them lol. Anyway, huge music fan. Gotta have it, can't live without it. As far as album count is concerned, well, I'm not sure. Guessing off the top of my head I'd say I have about 500-800 albums. I listen to whatever I like, genre's be damned. Over the last few years I've become a monstrous Led Zeppelin/Robert Plant fanatic. Honestly I haven't been too impressed with the direction music has been going in the last few years, which is why I sort of went to the past to look for new (to me) stuff.

I'm something of a music nut. I've got something like 3300 songs on Itunes, totaling over 10 days of music straight. I do own probably about 100 or so albums, but I tend to get a lot of music online and pick up the albums later. I have this strange thing I do, where I don't like buying CDs online unless they're new releases. I'll pre-order or buy an album so I get it the day it comes out, but other than that I always try to find the CDs in stores. And since some of my music is exceptionally rare and hard-to-find, that can be a problem with buying an album.
As far as genres go, aside from not really caring about genre, I'm a huge fan of metal. Mostly melodic death metal, but I go all over the place, from NWOBHM to black metal. And outside of metal I get pretty eclectic - from classic rock to pop-punk to techno to prog-rock to whatever the hell else I like listening to. As far as I'm concerned, genre is a name that has no bearing on the music. if I like it, I'll listen to it.

I'm probably a music nut as well, although all of my purchased music is CDs. I don't have an iPod or iTunes. I do occasionally download songs for free, but if I like them enough, I buy the album. Genres I like include: indie, alternative, alt-country, electronica, blues, soul, folk, singer-songwriter, and a few others. No mainstream country or rap--key word here being "mainstream". This may sound ironic coming from an atheist, but I also don't like metal at all. My last.fm if anyone's interested: last.fm/user/mysticalchicken If you're on there, add me if you want.

When you can buy a song for a buck, it makes it more accessible, and if the rest of the album's crap, it doesn't stop you. Though I sometimes buy the CDs on half.com, since I can get them for 3 bucks with shipping and there may be some decent stuff on it. Wouldn't do it for Brittney Spears, but for a lot of acts, I would. I've been downloading a lot of music legally through eMusic, and a few albums through Amazon. I refuse to purchase through iTunes, though. Also, I love Bowie. A lot of my tastes in Rock are easily explainable because my father played a lot of 50s and 60s rock, but Queen and Bowie were two of my first musical discoveries. The Who, sort of as Well, because my father only owned one GH CD.

I fall into the music-obsessive category, as it's pretty much the first topic of conversation I'll swing to given the opportunity, I value some members of my CD collection over my friends, try and plan out what I'm gonna buy and when and post top 10 of the year lists for the fun of it - I also have an internal soundtrack rather than monologue. My collection isn't uber-large, somewhere around 400ish I'd guess, pretty squarely centred in punk, post-hardcore and it's emoesque offshoots and indie rock Here it is: rateyourmusic.com/~disgruntledcolonel It's all CD based - I do then copy most of it onto I-Tunes and my IPod, but otherwise, I'm a whore for independent record stores - They're just my favourite places in the world, the people who work there, the fun of browsing the shelves and the good ones just smell right, and I'm unable to leave without a new purchase. Plus I just like having the physical entity to hold, store and put in the player.

I have 211 albums (catalogued HERE), all CDs. I refuse to download anything that's still in print and available to buy - It's not a 'moral' issue or anything, it's just that I love having the artwork 'n' shit. I'm into all kinds of stuff, but have a special affection for industrial/electronic type stuff. I'm always looking into other genres that I previously neglected (right now I'm going through a black metal kick), and love having as diverse a music collection as possible.

Seems as good a place as any to post my LastFM profile.. Good way to size up my listening habits. A couple things to keep in mind, though.... The high number of listens allotted to Beth Orton, Dar Williams, Melissa Ferrick, etc. come from the initial dump it did of my iPod. I wouldn't have counted most of the plays. You see, I fall asleep listening to music, so there's probably 6+ hours a night I'm not really listening at all. I mean, I love Beth Orton, but there's no way she outstrips Queen nearly 7:1. Also, Only about a quarter of my total songs have even 1 listen on iTunes, and since I'm relatively new to last.fm, I doubt even all them have been reflected. I'm on a kick of listening to stuff with no plays listed, so there should be more diversity there with time, but you know.

I have just over 1000 tracks on my computer. I know; but I have a lot of songs that I can listen to a million times without getting sick of them. I listen to anything from Zeppelin to classical, but no country or rap/hip hop. Can't stand that shit. I usually borrow CDs from the public library and then rip them onto my computer if I like the songs.

I'm kind of a music nut. Actually, a bit of a music snob. I listen to a lot of 80's shit. Not like Prince or anything like that, I mean like The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, New Order...y'know, good shit. I also listen to a lot of EBM/Industrial type stuff, VNV Nation, And One, etc.
Yep. :wanders off:
