Found this while I was looking for articles on the Pope rejecting condom use. www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/02/11/health.hiv.stemcell/On the other hand, this is far from a miracle. Even if this isn't the wonder cure it first appears to be, it's pretty exciting to see the kind of applications that they are attempting to use stem cells for. Not to mention, possible treatments for AIDS

Well, now with the extra funding going towards stem cell research, this might just be the beginning. Who knows what can happen by the time Obama goes up for a second term.

Not much in terms of this, unfortunately. This type of transplant is dangerous, and as the article stated, there are likely to be rogue virus particles hanging around. Stem cells may help tremendously, but I don't think they're the answer.

Next time a fundie says stem cell research went nowhere in the past eight years, just tell them we cured AIDS.

....and they will just say "No God did it."

Since this apparently used non-embryonic stem cells, theoretically the fundies can be happy about it. But somehow I imagine they'll find a reason to object anyway.

Yeah, they'll probably pull something like, "But god said that you can't use other people's stem cells! It's not natural!" or something like that.

One of the lies they're spreading to get people to oppose stem cell research is that it caused no breakthroughs whatsoever in the last eight years. (Another lie is that that somehow implies that it's worthless.)

That's pretty much what the argument was about organ transplants when they were new. Anytime politics are involved with science, it always fucking slows down the science. It's just the same empty bullshit, people bitching and freaking out over something they simply don't understand.

But this will let people be gay without consequences. It's against god's will for people to be happy and free of hideously debilitating disease, you know.

Even under the best of circumstances in eight years it would still be unlikely to get beyond the trial stage. First we have to understand the basic biology. There is a lot about cells that is not understood.

There is a lot about cells that is not understood. And it won't be understood without intense study. But then, because I understand that is likely part of why I'm for scientific research.

This is a nice little look into what the future may hold. Obviously it will take a long time to figure out safer ways to apply the power of stem cells, but still, this is wonderful.
