I never understood the whole furry hatred thing. Neither do I. I'm a mild furry myself, as is my boyfriend. We mostly just joke about it when we're alone ("cat" girl, "wolf" guy...not hard to come up with some fun raunchy jokes about that) or laugh at the "humanimals" who take themselves too seriously, like the Lizardman. And as for Umbert...I've known about him for years. I gave up on it when I read a review of the comic that says he communicates with other fetuses via the "Interwomb." It's basically just a pro-life version of Pogo.

One thing I can say in Umbert the Unborn's defence is that it recognises the nature of consciousness and self-awareness, which puts it above 95% of pro-life arguments. Of which my favourite is that fetuses have those traits by virtue of possessing a heat-shock response.* My own research work concerns the heat-shock response of Escherichia coli, so I recognise only too well the absurd places this argument leads. A close second is that looking vaguely human (which is questionable in itself, depending on the stage of development) is what matters.
It's still wrong about the fetus being conscious and self-aware to any appreciable degree, but at least it tries.
* Never phrased that way, but it's what "the fetus can feel pain" basically boils down to.
