Oh they've updated it since Bush was in office. Also, what has Obama done that violated the Constitution? He didn't spy on Americans or rig elections or invade a sovereign nation after lying to the American people.

I give up! I've tried to twist my mind in all possible directions, and even a couple of impossible ones, but I still fail to see what is supposed to be funny.

Can anyone explain to me why affirmative action (which I thought applied to jobs, not friends...) is horrible?

Can anyone explain to me why affirmative action (which I thought applied to jobs, not friends...) is horrible? The argument goes that unqualified minorities will take the jobs of qualified white people, due to quotas to fill.

Can anyone explain to me why affirmative action (which I thought applied to jobs, not friends...) is horrible? Because if you have two highly qualified people competing for a position they base their judgements on race which they believe to be unfair. I actually disagree with affirmative action based on race--I would rather see it based on class. A person from a lower-income background has to fight that much harder to get to where they are, and race-based affirmative action ignores the fact that there are many poor people who aren't minorities.

What makes this one even worse is that the blog post originally containing it also had a blurb saying "The only thing worse than sharing a tent with a liberal..." or something along those lines.

They can take race as a "plus factor" so to speak.

I was just throwing out the Conservative version of why AA is bad. I thought that was what Deadpan was after.

Actually, I was after the serious explanation. Given that all applicants are qualified, I really can't see what's wrong with making sure the workplace isn't racially and culturally homogeneous, as it is in convervatards' wet dreams.

Well I'm not sure if racial and cultural diversity actually matter in a workplace. I've always felt that affirmitive action was a tool to aid people overcome institutional discrimination more than anything else. The factors I'd take into consideration would be: 1. Qualifications 2. Economic situation. This is especially true for institutions of higher learning where they do ask applicants if their family members are alumni or have donated money to the university in question.
