Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and joy, when families come together to celebrate the wonder of the season. It is supposed to be a day where we are grateful for the blessings in our lives and think of those less fortunate than ourselves. But all too often, this is not true.
In fact, I believe Christmas is the season of the seven deadly sins. It is a time of great hypocrisy: people who don't even like each other are forced to socialise for the sake of (insert social unit here); commercialism is rampant; charity, instead of being offered and given freely, is invoked through guilt trips.
Here are the Seven Deadly Sins and how they affect Christmas:
Greed: Bigger is better, therefore you must have the latest objects in order to be happy at Christmas. Not to mention that people generally want more, more, more.
Envy: If you don't have the above, you feel negative about it.
Gluttony: Disgusting amounts of food and alcohol are consumed.
Wrath: Christmas is generally where the biggest family fights occur, people get angry during shopping, and there's more violence because of greater alcohol consumption.
Sloth: Once the food is consumed, people generally don't want to do anything but loll around and consume more things/watch TV/etc.
Pride: People take pride in displaying their wealth and their presents, how the house is done up for the holidays, what they gave/received.
Lust: Aside from potential issues at office parties, lust is more than just physical, sexual desire. It can be about the gratification of base urges not covered by the previous deadly sins.
I've chosen to use the seven deadly sins because these are mostly likely to be familiar to everyone, be they pagan, Abrahamic or non-believer. For those who aren't, here's the Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_deadly_sins
This isn't in F&B because I wanted to put it out there for discussion. Feel free to add your own comments.
