I have noticed a rather annoying trend of late on the main page. Someone submits a quote that is reeking of idiotic adherence to dogma, but is not religious in nature and someone in the comments will chime in with a comment to the effect of "why is this here? This isn't religious so it's not fundie."
For the last time, fundie does not automatically mean religious. Fundie means a person so blinded by their unthinking devotion to a belief, any belief, they say stupid things. You can have political fundies, pseudoscience fundies, and yes, even atheist fundies.
I'm tired of explaining this. FSTDT has operated under this definition of fundie since Winace ran the place, so this isn't something I just made up.

Totally with you, dude. I want to smack people when they do that.
"Fundie" means simply "fundamentalist", not specifically "religious fundamentalist", although it certainly includes religious fundies. Distind even covers this very well in the site FAQ, but very few people read it. Hell, my favorite fundies on FSTDT actually include a libertarian free-market fundie, a feminist fundie from Y!A (who was actually possibly a poe, but I still found her amusing), and a black racist.
Edit: Fixed typographical fail.

Glad to know I'm not alone in this. Can Distind just slap something at the top of the main page to this effect? I know it's in the FAQ, but like you said, nobody reads it. I really think this misconception hurts the site.

This topic comes up with some regularity, people mostly agree and maybe quarrel a trifle over certain specifics, and things stay about the same. I don't doubt that Distind could easily post a definition in a highly visible place, but I do doubt that it would have much impact. Folks who can't be bothered to read an FAQ aren't much more likely to note some definition in a visible location, possibly a definition posted by a commie terrorist.

I'm currently working on a method of revamping things so we get less of that sort of user base, because it's driving just about everyone nuts.

Renae is releasing an army of nanobots that will be implanted into submitters and commenters via keyboard. Those who do not seem to grasp the functional definition of "fundamentalist" as employed here will be given one warning, and then rendered sterile and disappointingly (for them, albeit briefly so) short of autonomic nervous functions.

There's a reason I said I'm working on it, and not that I have it.

I really think this misconception hurts the site. Frankly, I've more or less stopped trying to explain things to those guys. They're pretty much our fundies. I say this mostly based on when one of them got quoted for advocating the destruction of everyone who follows religion, and people were arguing it didn't belong on the mainpage. Not DIAF, or This Person Deserves To Die, but all of them. Generally he's an intelligent guy, but that doesn't stop you from saying something main page worthy. If it's gotten to the main page odds are either Renae or myself approved it, so I'm rather out of ammo for dealing with these guys. Aside from possibly adding something to detect 'this isn't fundie' as a comment and instituting an auto-bitchslap which jumps them straight to the definition of fundie.

Just tell them it's too much hassle to rename the site, "Ideologues Say the Darndest Things"
Myself, I'm more amused by the "darndest" part of the comments rather than if they are Fundy.
