These lyrics sound like an attempt at spoken word, and coming from Carman, sounds extra preachy and douchey at the same time, like this macho Italian dude from New Jersey became a born again Christian or something like that. ;D What is really obnoxious is when he talks about how America has to turn back in his idea of a patriotic song. Yeah, I was going to post a whole separate thread about his prayer in schools song. It's just as bad, if not worse. I might still do it, or post the lyrics here or something. I'm still relatively new here, so I'll ask you guys. Since it changes the topic from science to history, does it deserve a new thread? But since it's still about the same singer, should it stay in this one?

Actually he has TWO songs about prayer in schools. One actually goes as far as to call it "religious apartheid".
I think it might deserve a new thread.

You could edit the thread title to reflect a more Carman-oriented deal (instead of a Carman/Creationists lineup) and then you should be set.

Carman's view of history and American politics is equally special. Here's his account of the 1962 court decision that did away with mandatory prayer in public (government run, I should remind you) school. I was very young when my mom put A2J on repeat for several years, it's taken me a long time to track down and confront these songs that still managed to get stuck in my head after I left christianity at age 19.
"Our Turn Now" From the album Addicted 2 Jesus
"Good evening. This is Charlene Lewis for the 6:00 news. Today, June 25, 1962, the Supreme Court has ruled that school prayer and Bible reading shall cease in all public school systems. It is now official; God has been removed from the classroom in the United States of America."
The ball got dropped in '62 They wouldn't let children pray in school Violent crime began to rise The grades went down and the kids got high Free love, gay rights, no absolutes, abortion on demand Brought VD, AIDS, and no morality Today no one knows right from wrong There's blood on people's hands World, you had your turn at bat Now stand back and see
That it's our turn now Something's gonna change We're gonna bind the devil at every hand by the power of Jesus' name Well, it's our turn now think it no surprise When the gates of hell come crashing down And you begin to see the church arise
The Supreme Court said, "No God at all" With the Ten Commandments on their wall God's Word in the library won't appear We have a religious apartheid here Humanism, atheism, no Bible, our consciences have died We need to seek our God and call His name The church triumphant's still alive and we're gonna turn the tide 'Cause with boldness and conviction, we proclaim
Arise and shine, for the Light has come It's time to lift the name of Jesus high
Yes, it's our turn now Something's gonna change We're gonna bind that devil at every hand by the power of Jesus' name It's our turn now, think it no surprise When the gates of hell come crashing down You begin to see the church arise It's our turn now It's no surprise See those gates of hell crash down When you begin to see the church arise
America Again From the album RIOT
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson Samuel Adams, First Chief Justice John Jay Names synonymous with the spirit of our country Founding fathers of the U.S.A.
Over 200 years ago they shook off the chains of tyranny from Great Britain By divine call Citing 27 biblical violations they wrote the Declaration of Independence With liberty and justice for all
But something happened since Jefferson called the Bible the cornerstone For American liberty then put it in our schools as a light Or since "Give me liberty, or give me death," Patrick Henry said Our country was founded on the Gospel of Jesus Christ
We eliminated God from the equation of American life Thus eliminating the reason this nation first began From beyond the grave I hear the voices of our founding fathers plead You need God in America again
Of the 55 men who formed the Constitution Fifty-two were active members of their church Founding fathers like Noah Webster who wrote the first dictionary Could literally quote the Bible chapter and verse
James Madison said, "We've staked our future on our ability to follow The Ten Commandments with all our heart" These men believed you couldn't even call yourself an American If you subvert the Word of God
In his farewell address, Washington said, "You can't have national morality apart from religious principle," and it's true 'Cause right now we have nearly 150,000 kids carrying guns To these war zones we call public schools
In the '40's and '50's student problems were chewing gum and talking In the '90's, rape and murder are the trend The only way this nation can even hope to last this decade Is put God in America again
The only hope for America is Jesus The only hope for our country is Him If we repent of our ways stand firm and say We need God in America again
Abe Lincoln said, "The philosophy of the classroom in one generation Will be the philosophy of government of the next" So when you eliminate the Word of God from the classroom and politics You eliminate the nation that Word protects
America is now number one in teen pregnancy and violent crime Number one in illiteracy, drug use, and divorce Everyday a new holocaust of 5,000 unborn die While pornography floods our streets like open sewers
America's dead and dying hand is on the threshold of the Church While the spirit of Sodom and Gomorrah vex us all When it gets to the point where people would rather Come out of the closet than clean it It's a sign that the judgment of God is gonna fall
If there's ever been a time to rise up Church, it's now And as the blood bought saints of the living God proclaim That it's time to sound the alarm from the Church house to the White House And say, "We want God in America again"
I believe it's time for America to stand up and proclaim That one nation under God is our demand And send this evil lifestyle back to Satan where it came from And let the Word of God revive our dying land
For Jesus Christ is coming back again in all His glory And every eye shall see Him on that day That's why a new anointing of God's power's coming on us To boldly tell the world you must be saved
Because astrology won't save you, your horoscope won't save you The Bible says these things are all a farce If you're born again, you don't need to look to the stars for your answers 'Cause you can look to the very One who made those stars
History tells us time and time again To live like there's no God makes you a fool If you want to see kids live right Stop handing out condoms and start handing out the Word of God in schools
The only hope for America is Jesus The only hope for our country is Him If we repent of our ways Stand firm and say We need God in America again
We need God in America God in America God in America again

To his benefit, Carman has a very good voice and range. He was a particular favorite of mine when I was trying to find a way to "fit in" to fundieland.
To his detriment, his voice and songwriting sensibilities are completely wasted by doing overly preachy xtian music. And the newer rap stuff must just be horrible. I actually saw him in concert (the mega church that is/used to be in Tinley Park) well prior to A2J and RIOT. It was kind of like musical theater where all of the performers are closeted and self-loathing (rather than out, proud, and FABULOUS).
This waste offends me more than anything else, and happens frequently in the CCM arena (take a listen to Bride, especially the Kinetic Faith and Snakes in the playground albums, for example). It seems, more and more, the artists realize they are wasting away and knock it off. My favorite example of this is Circle of Dust/Celldweller/Angeldust. Scott Albert (Klayton/Klay Scott) is the center of all three and they progress from being on the bleeding edge of xtian to being outright secular, and Angeldust was his collaboration with Criss Angel.

I absolutely agree. I remember thinking when I was a kid that his voice was sexy. I also remember having nightmares and sitting up all night from watching the video for "witch's invitation", even though I was a little kid, and in no way a witch (yet). I was in no danger of hell, but I was scared shitless, because the idea of demons dragging you to hell is still terrifying to a six year old. His concerts are pretty interesting, even with the obnoxious rap (which, if you've been raised exclusively listening to christian music, you might wind up thinking it's good stuff because you don't really have anything to compare it to). I remember having a blast...when I was like 10. The most annoying thing about the concert for me was the bibleman skit at the beginning. Yes, bibleman toured with Carman. It was frightening. Around my Jr. High years, I started listening to ska and punk music. Christian ska and punk was actually good enough that a lot of my non christian friends listened to it too. It seems to be the one thing christian music got right. BTW, if I can figure out how to put a VHS tape on the internet, I'll try to show off my anti-secular music propaganda. Oh Phil Chalmers. Bet you never would have guessed your videos would be used as something to put on in the background of large drinking parties.

Damn, I had forgotten about those songs. I went to many, many a Carmen concert back in the day. He was one of my favourite artists before I discovered the Newsboys and DC Talk ( I still have a giant crush on Michael Tait).
