JW's are not supposed to read the Bible for themselves. For instance, they might find out that "144,000" refers to the number of Israelites, and that Jesus' second coming is supposed to be obvious and unmistakable, all this while the heads in Brooklyn are re-writing their own canon.
How long before they burn libraries?

... This is a joke right? You're not serious, because as a former JW, pretty much nothing you said is accurate.

How far into it did you get? Did you also know they predicted the End would come in 1914, 1918, 1927, 1941, 1975...
They believe that Christ has already invisibly returned.

We have a number of former JWs here, but those look to resemble the 'What mormons really believe' videos that drive skyfire nuts. So I'd guess there's about a 50% shot they're accurate on a given point, even if not the visualization of it.

By the way, something that's been bothering me for a while: the faith's adherents are called Jehovah's Witnesses, what's the religion itself called? Jehovah's Witnessing?

Jehovah's Witness Protection Program.
I don't know, that joke's probably been done like a billion times before.

Hi there, former JW here. I can tell ya that, at least with the particular group to whom I was exposed, never said "don't read the bible." In fact, they flat out told us on many occasions to read the bible ourselves and reach our own conclusions.
Also, OP, what in the hell are you blabbering about? You go from some people doing some shit to their book, to burning libraries. That's a leap if ever there was one.
In short:

How far into it did you get? Pioneered for just shy of 2 years, on track to being a ministerial servant. Yes, but that's a far cry from what you said. And? It's dogma, one religion interprets a scripture one way, another a different.

A word of advice: just because we are called FSTDT does not mean that we are some kind of automatic-hate/attack machine on religions. Several times people have come here and posted something fairly inflammatory expecting the board to jump on their bandwagon and scream about some religion or another, only to be astounded when the boards demanded more from the poster.
The OP makes a fairly large leap from internal suppression of religious material to outward book burnings. If you want to discuss the JW church, that would be welcomed. We have several former JWs here on the board who would likely get involved, but you have to actually start a discussion, not just post a drive-by snark and expect acclimation.

But sandy, he's so witty and clever! We should fondle him with adoration! We should fall to our knees whenever he so much as graces us with his presence!

As for the videos, the first one is right, up til about the 2 minute mark. It may have been either explained differently, or outright changed between the time of the video and when I was a Witness, but it's not exclusively JW's who survive Armageddon, and it's not 144,000 JWs - but 144,000 chosen from throughout history, some of which are supposed to be Witnesses.
As for the second video, the quotes are real enough, I just think they're used as a strawman, since Witnesses don't really tell anyone not to read the Bible for themselves, or that they should only read the New World Translation. More like "for a proper understanding you need supplemental information" which, really doesn't make them different from any other Christian religion.

I would like to see the JW's themselves come and explain themselves. I've already seen a YouTube video, "Cartoon Banned By Mormon Church" interrupted with rebuttals by a Mormon. Straightens a few things out, but Mormonism even at that is still silly and ridiculous. I would also like to see something by Christopher Hitchens about the JW's. He's already taken a swack at the LDS, why not the Jehovah's Witnesses! the sandman: you have nothing to worry about with me. Mainstream Christians are people with whom I can agree to disagree. In fact one of my best online friends is a Christian. The Mormons and JW's are cults that need to be put in their place.

Yeah, about the not reading the Bible part? Witnesses have a meeting segment every week dedicated to just that. Not saying it's not a cult, because it most certainly is. But at least get it right as to why. Spreading misinformation just discredits the person spreading it. By the way, something that's been bothering me for a while: the faith's adherents are called Jehovah's Witnesses, what's the religion itself called? Jehovah's Witnessing? The Truth. Seriously.

He's already taken a swack at the LDS, why not the Jehovah's Witnesses! So former JWs who have lots of experience with it are somehow not good enough? If you want JWs to explain themselves, go visit one of their Kingdom Halls or wait for them to knock on your door. It's all silly -- just a different brand of silly. Unfortunately for your generalization, there are lots of Mormons and JWs who are just as friendly and unassuming as your average Xian. I have a bunch of Mormon neighbors -- they're nice, their kids are good to my kids, they're good to me, and religion has never come up once. JWs can sometimes be simple minded, but in general they are kind to most people. Being kicked out is another thing altogether -- but I think you'd find most Xian groups react the same way to excommunicated members.
