Pirates drinking! I am all kinds of shocked. Skies of Arcadia, at least the legends version, ended up averting this, though it was rather thinly veiled. All references from the Japanese game to "liquor" became a sweet berry drink "loqua," which I just assumed was "liquor"anyway. One character dresses up as a belly dancer, and the costume is slightly racier in Japan. One of the characters, Gilder, smoked in the Japanese version, though removing the cig from his victory animation doesn't look all that bad. Combined with his victory line of "That was too easy," it looks like he's...Well, yawning. I was told there are also a couple of lines that involve allusions to rape of a character in the Japanese version, though it's harder to verify that sort of thing than the visual type. However, there's a lecherous villain who was shirtless in one scene in Japan, so I can guess A) What scene might have it, B) Why people might think that one way or another. All this comes down to the same sort of logic, in as much as "we can't have pirates (Most of the characters, good or bad, are pirates) doing things...Associated with pirates!" Though since Vyse is somewhere between a Mary Sue and the kind of shitty Cloud-Strife-esque character development, I'm surprised he lets anyone who is even remotely tainted by vice (no pun intended, I'm sure...) on his ship. Ever.

And what would you characterize as "Cloud-Strife-esque character development"?
Feel free to substitute a more generic term, if you wish. Either way, it's not really clear what you're talking about.

Censorship on old video games is especially weird. In Harvest Moon, you can get very drunk on "juice" you get at the bar.
The weirdest that I've seen was the Final Fantasy stuff though. In Final Fantasy VI, they removed cigarettes from the sprites, added more clothing (because 16 bit porn is hottt) and removed any religious aspects from the game. The stone goddesses because statues. But that apparently wasn't crazy enough, so they renamed the spell "holy" "pearl."
Yes, having a spell named "holy" was too religious for NoA at the time.

In FFVIII the undead thing Gerogero had visible organs in the Japanse and North American version, but they were recolored from red to blue in the North American version.

The VI sprites have cigarettes?
I can't remember the reason, but the absurd censorship stopped after VI. My favorite is that they translated "committed suicide by jumping off the cliffs" as "took a leap of faith."

That makes sense. The thing had organs in both versions, but in the North American version, they were colored blue.
It's sort of sad that I can understand his half-assed sentences....

I can see it now, Lithp's translation helped a lot.

My favorite is that they translated "committed suicide by jumping off the cliffs" as "took a leap of faith." Part of it was the platform jump. NoA's policies were the ones that caused censorship, Sony didn't care. I forgot about some other FF VI stuff - they changed the spell "Death" to "Doom" and changed the signs labeled "Pub" to "Cafe." Here's the nudity censorship. The left is the original Japanese, the middle is the American version, and the right is the American GBA port. If I had seen the Japanese version when I was a kid, my innocence would have been ruined forever. I can't find the smoking sprite, but I think it was an enemy called Madame with a cigarette. They took the smoke out.

There was another sprite in an early Final Fantasy title that was a naked woman barely covered by mist. Needless to say in the North American version it was almost entirely covered.

I almost forgot about that. It's in FFVI too, I think. There are a few others that get clothing added, like Goddess. I can't keep track of all of them though. Despite being the resident FFVI scholar.

Yep, that's her. I could find the smoking one but not the nonsmoking one, strangely enough.

Oh, hey, I found her. Her name's Chadarnook. She was in FFVI too (funny how that one got all the censorship.) Cover up, you strumpet. That is much better. Seriously, some of these changes are so minor I find it hilarious. Edit: Screw you, Mantorok, and your beating me by thirty seconds.
