Just asking what is to prevent us from gradually making more stupid remarks that is on the level of most fundies?
For proof, we can link sources, but what about our own behavior?

I think everyone could remind themselves of what they used to believe.
Don't know what good that does for the lifetime atheists though.

Education? I don't deny that I've said stupid things throughout my life and still probably do say stupid things. The point is to learn from said stupid remarks and move on. I would say most everyone is guilty of saying something stupid at least once in their lives. The difference is not getting buttsore once something posted on the public internet appears on another website where people are allowed to expose said stupidity for what it really is.

True we can have a stupid moments.
But I am talking about gradually becoming a bit more extreme.
Maybe if we don't take our comments seriously and keep it in jest maybe it could prevent us going to a different extreme.
But that is not a 100% guarantee.

There's never, ever a 100% guarantee that keeps people from sliding into extremism. It's comfortable. People like having a black and white world - it makes heuristics VASTLY simpler. Intelligence is a tool you can use to avoid it, but it doesn't do anything by itself. All you can do is take stock of where you are once in awhile, and if you feel like you're slipping out of an appropriate place (whatever that might mean for you) work to get yourself back to where you want to be.
Basically, being a good person isn't some trait you just acquire, it's a road you walk day by day.

I find that continuing the read and evaluate what the other side says helps, or helps to polarize us, depending on how far removed my perception of reality is to theirs.

The reason I started this thread is because through our sneering and jest, we could be giving them argument ammunition.
This site is a double edged sword, we can expose their stupidity yet this site may make them even more entrenched in their mindset.
Occasionally we shoot ourselves in the foot by becoming a bit close to their version of an atheist/liberal/whatever.
I just hope we don't gradually begin to shoot ourselves in the foot more often.

I honestly don't see why it matter if we give "them" ammunition for argument. People will always find a flaw in something they disagree with. I don't find that I need to conform to please others to that degree on the internet..I do that enough in my daily life.

I've been in a few threads that I thought got out of hand as people just got nasty and stupid - I tried to point it out but was ignored. Meh, I guess it could happen to anyone.

It's already happening. It will continue to happen. Even if most of us aren't there, some of us will be. There are steps I'm planning to take to hopefully keep us out of that dark abyss for a time, but there are no guarantees. If nothing else, I could always go around slapping people upside the head when they get completely idiotic.

Or spray us with a hose.

I didn't realise there was a purpose to this other than pointing and laughing.

If nothing else, I could always go around slapping people upside the head when they get completely idiotic. also you never know where the line should be drawn. You can't say that people shouldn't be blatantly nasty because then you have to play judge in every thread specifically. The thread I remember it in, was the one about mother Duggar (I forget her name) having her 19th child and people getting downright crude and vicious about what having sex with her would be like and how parts of her were going to fall out any minute now...you get the idea. Now I have no love for the Duggars, the Quiverfull Movement, old testament logic, or child worshiping fundies in general but some of the things said ranked right up there with some of the nasty things Politico said about Obama's daughter - they were uncalled for, vicious and personal attacks rather than criticism of her philosophy based actions. It was bizarre to see the same people who talk about personal freedom and a right to believe and do as you please attack the woman personally rather than just her idiotic philosophy. I know I've gotten carried away at times but that was just...extreme IMO.

If we have to be tasteful, civil and studious what's the fun in playing? Here's an idea: let them start.
