Sure, being civil is alright, but by damn it, being tasteless is downright fun sometimes. I believe there's a line between trying to be tasteful at all times, and becoming a bunch of self-righteous, pretentious pricks with academic accents who sit around sipping their fuck-off expensive tea while going on and on about how the antics of people like me are so "blue collar."
Yeah, I'm rude, I'm crude, and I'm violent. I'm the kind of guy who laughs at damn near anything, and would join a bar fight for the hell of it. Get tha stick outta your ass, grab a beer, and laugh at someone remarking about some Quiverfull retard's vagina being more spacious than Carlsbad Caverns.
This place (to me) has always been about fun. Sure, we can have nice, thought-provoking discussions, but in the end, we're here because its fun. Or at least I am. Fuck, isn't the entire point of the mainpage to laugh at the stupidity of others...or did I miss something?

It is. Also, some of those comments about body parts falling out were scientifically based... I mean ffs the woman had to have herself sewn up just so she could carry a kid to term. Uterine prolapse was a legitimate possibility.
But yeah, it's a fine line to walk.

And, if done right, it can be a fun line to dance around.

In my experiences, that's not what academics do. Some of the "crudest" people I've met have Ph.Ds.

Oh man, get 2 or more Ph.Ds. in the same field with different theoretical backgrounds in the same room and it'll get heated really fast.

Yeah. Academic professionals are really politically correct... I remember one time when I was late for a lecture. When walked in the classroom the professor looked at me - and gave me the finger.

And, if done right, it can be a fun line to dance around. I'm not saying you can't - just that it's hypocritical to criticize people for being vicious and then do it yourself. If your okay with them doing it because it's fun for them (like the fundies who wish AIDs on all gay people and laugh and point when known personalities die from it) then I guess it's thumbs up all the way. You have a right to be (verbally) vicious, and, yes, it can be fun - but be aware then, that at that time, you become the monster you fight. It's the kind of hypocrisy that makes me crazy - when Fox News does it, when I hear Sarah Palin admonish the media for 'making things up' or when I hear a 'christian' saying something that their own holy book preaches against. If your going to criticize - Great - I love the Daily Show making Fox news look stupid by putting their own clips next to each other. I'm all for George Carlin's swearfest antics and "I don't give a shit" attitude, but a few years ago I heard the same abortion debate political joke told by 2 different comedians of differing political stripe... "I don't know why they protest, it's not like anyone would want to fuck them anyway." 'they' being the alternatively the pro-life or the pro-choice groups.

"I don't know why they protest, it's not like anyone would want to fuck them anyway." 'they' being the alternatively the pro-life or the pro-choice groups. Is this a problem, really? I'm not sure if you're complaining about this being a "becoming the monster you fight" deal. I was pro-life when I first heard Carlin say it, and I thought it was funny as HELL. On the other hand, the only problem I have with hearing the joke now is that it's been done (woo hoo hoo) and done to death. Doesn't seem hypocritical for both "sides" to have comedians making the same joke. Especially because it's, you know, comedy. I get it on the rest. I mean, the people who wish death or pain or disease on people are horrible. Simply doing the same is "an eye for an eye" and I don't approve. But that's different, because it's actually doing something horrible.

The psychological method for explaining humanity is fundamentally flawed, we need to look at neurology and human evolution to really understand us. Or, better yet, look at the influence of genes on personality.
