I just went to take a crap. our bathroom has a door leading into my mom's room. So I heard perfectly clear when my brother came in and said his ex-girlfriend was in the hospital. At first I thought that pillhead finally went overboard, then he said she had HIV. had it for a year, for several months of which he was living with her and using the pill. He gets tested on monday, I'm no expert but I think the chances of him not catching it are slim to nonexistant.

Wow, that sucks. I know its unlikely but I hope he's managed to avoid it. HIV is horrible.

Damn. The odds against him are bad, yes, but maybe he got lucky. It's a good thing there are antiretroviral drugs that can help. But still, damn.

Don't assume he has it - yet. There's a fair chance he has contracted HIV, but a fair chance he hasn't. Transmission rates for HIV are much lower than most people assume, and in a heterosexual relationship transmission is less likley when it is the female partner who has HIV than when the male partner has HIV. Also bear in mind that HIV/AIDS with careful treatment and modern drugs, is now a chronic lifelong condition rather than a death sentence.
I know this is all still going to be very difficult, but I hope the picture isn't quite as bad as you thought it was. And I really hope your brother is ok.

As Angel said, the odds are lower for woman to man than from man to woman. I guess at this point it's luck of the draw.
Hope everything turns out okay.

Let's hope the stem cell research people can come up with a cure as well as a means to resist HIV.
Let's also hope that such a cure will not be necessary in this case.

Alright he's negative. Now the whole family gets to make fun of him about this for the rest of his life, for his own good.
