Found it - United Brethren; this is what I was thinking about. The UB was a group of British Protestants who broke off from the Primitive Methodists. Wilford Woodruff, while serving as a missionary, was invited to speak at a few of their congregations in April of 1840. Within eight months, all but one of the 600+ members of the UB became Mormon and at least one UB church building was converted into an LDS meetinghouse (which is still standing today). Between Woodruff and a handful of other missionaries, a total of 1800 converts were made in the region. |

I was talking about looking through a few church-related history books, such as the Institute (college-level seminary) manual I've got sitting in the book case right next to me. If you're talking the actual physical records themselves, they're probably in the church's archives. |

Oh, I see. Actually, I'm now thinking that lds church records might be the only source for this. I'm not being snarky, it's just that the events you described would probably not have hit any other radar at the time, and so no other record probably exists.
