It hasn't activated yet, but it looks like virus experts are expecting it to wreak some havoc anyway. tech.yahoo.com/news/afp/20090402/tc_afp/usitinternetcrimesoftwareconfickermicrosoftlead Lots of people don't seem to concerned about it, but I'm trying to make sure that everyone in my family is protected against it. My mom especially, she can barely figure out how to turn on the PC without it exploding. A quick test to make sure you're not infected: Boot your computer up in safe mode. Conficker prevents your computer from booting in safe mode, so if you can't, you might want to get it looked at by a professional. My computer science teacher warned us against trying to take care of it ourselves, since it is very resistant to destruction/quarantine. Just thought I'd pass on this warning (even though most people hate virus alerts). No one is really sure what the virus will do, and I don't want to see anyone's identity get stolen if that is indeed what it does.

Funny thing about this virus, is that it turns your computer into a zombie that accepts commands from a remote bot-master, and with an estimated 3 million infected PCs it could probably bring the internet to standstill (by DDoSing attacking root DNS servers). But so far, whoever is at the helm so to speak has done absolutely nothing with it.
Anyway, thanks for the Safe Mode tip. For anyone who doesn't know how to do that, one way is to hold F8 while starting the computer and select safe mode when the menu appears.
