HIV was spontaneously generated by GodJesus to punish gay people which also proves creationism because it's an example of a new species being created not to be confused with abiogenesis which can never happen. Yo dawg I herd u like confusion so I put a illogical in your illogical so you can pray while you pray. Seriously that statement almost reminds me of some of the arguing I've done. Anyway, from the start, where does homophobia stem from? I know the obvious answer to give is the holy texts of most religions but that has an evolutionary hold. However, other than being non-procreative, why was homosexuality tabooed in older cultures in the first place, or was that the only reason? I've heard that in ancient Greece it was considered the most pure form of attraction, but this may have been because their population was large anyway and they could probably afford to lose one or two potential offspring.

Well, part of it was probably the whole manly stereotype combined with patriarchal society. Most men like women and most women like men, so if you like men you are woman-like and thus inferior. I've heard that part of it was because buttsex is much more likely to transmit diseases than other kinds, so the taboo was put in place much the same way as many dietary laws. I'm not sure how true that is.

Makes sense. I never imagined homophobia could be linked to sexism 0_o
I mean, we cannot lie, internally humans generally feel a disgust for homosexual behavior (or at least, a straight man feels disgust for two men in such behavior). I personally will admit to it, but I grew up in a very conservative part of the country in the first place and find myself with ideas leaning toward the conservative side if not in the middle. It seems innate to find the idea of homosexual marriage to be odd or somehow something I can't stay near. And I don't know how many others have this (irrational) natural sense about it.
But my next question is that other than the fact that it can transmit disease quickly, from an evolutionary perspective, why would that fear of homosexuality evolve? In another thread on the site an article said that certain species of rams exhibit homosexual behavior and are considered "manly" for it and those who refuse are outcasts. So why are we afraid of it?

You see someone of your own gender - that you can identify with - doing it with someone you have no attraction to. Similarly, a man having sex with very ugly or very old women is also not wrong, but disturbs people nonetheless, because instinctively, "I wouldn't do it" = "something is wrong with it".
I don't think there's an evolutionary reason to be disgusted by homosexuality specifically, only a "strange = wrong" gut feeling which is too crude for how complex a mature person's view should be. An education that reinforces relying on it is, I believe, mistaken.

Ah, I see, it's not a specific response to homosexuality, it's a general one to things that just don't match with the individual. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

I'm actually disgusted by a guy kissing a girl. Less disgusted by two girls kissing (More meh than dislike), but my attention is caught by two guys so much as holding hands.
*Off the cuff psychology*
We all have things that inspire an "ick" response in us. That's our... psyche? reminding us that we don't want anything to do with that. The problem is when people try to enforce their "ick" reaction on other people.
However, I'd actually say that the "ick" response is 99% sociological and not so much of an innate reaction.

My guess is that homophobia came about because disease transmits more easily through the colon, and it may have been seen as a sort of punishment. Things like condoms make that pretty much a moot point, but the homophobia has stuck around, sort of like how vestigal organs are still around even though they no longer serve a purpose.

Only about a third of gay men have anal sex (source), so that doesn't really work.

I'm sure most people don't know that it's only a third though. They see gay men and think "Ew, buttsecks" regardless of any stats.
Homophobia seems to exist partly because it strays from the norm in our society. It's like picking on that kid in elementary school because he dressed funny. People can't seem to handle any sort of deviation.

Yeah, you're either a troll or an idiot. Who me? Look this thread was made as a joke. I apologize. I thought you were another idiot visitor trying to save our souls. Something told me you might've just been a smart @$$, but I ignored that voice that time.
