But if I were referencing the basics of what you said in the last line I might type it like this: You said it was 'hilarious and confusing' and I agree with that. 'Hilarious and confusing' is the gist but not a direct quote, the direct quote would be like this: You're right; it is "both hilarious and slightly confusing." So that's the way I thought it all worked, but then again, I have a history of getting shit wrong. Interesting, so you would use double quotes for a direct quotation and single for a gist-of-it quotation? I can't say I've encountered that distinction before.

I don't know the official rules I'll just make rules of my own. The important thing is to be consistent I figure.
'Sides, it's the internets. That is far more structure and control than the av-er-age bear.

There are so many alternative delimiters to choose from.
For quotes: “double quotes” ‘single quotes’ «double angle brackets» 〈single angle brackets〉 —em-dashes— 『Japanese big quotes』 「Japanese small quotes」
For parantheses: (round brackets) [square brackets] {curly brackets} —em-dashes (again)—
For emphasis on the internet: *asterisks* _low lines_ <less-than and greater-than signs>
...and the list goes on to include every symbol in every font, ever...

I'm pretty sure Red is doinitrite -- I'm a spelling/punctuation/grammar nazi. (And I've corrected mistakes in LOLSpeak, to boot! SRSLY!)

In many cases, the choice between single and double quotes is a matter of style, not grammar.
