www.rr-bb.com/showthread.php?t=87819For those who don't want to read the thread (I can't blame ya) this is a thread where the OP mentions that the earthquakes in Italy were predicted by a scientist, but the gov't didn't listen. It prompted responses like "Sad!! I hope next time they will listen " and "I hope the authorities have learned their lesson and next time heed the warning!" One poster say the connections to science like global warming, but the only response was snark. Do they really not see that maybe, just maybe, scientists know what they're talking about with things like the big bang, global warming, and evolution? Do they not see their hypocrisy?

"And here I present case-study A. The subjects here exhibit an astounding level of cognitive dissonance when exposed to two different concepts, both relating to the topic of Science. Note the complete failure to realise their position on one topic is completely contradictory when compared to the other. The complaints used against one are completely ignored or even forgotten when presented with the secondary topic. A fascinating look into the thought process of certain religiously minded folk. Now, moving on to illustrate the extent of such cognitive...." Seriously though, it amazes me. One would expect them to be consistent about their stance, but I guess it only goes for whenever it is convenient for them.

The only time they'll agree science knows anything is when it suits their goals or something that allows them to point the finger at someone else. No doubt this time it was 'stupid, godless euros'. If it happened here, they'd just claim god sent a vision of his punishment for gays/muslims/premarital sex/other flavor of the month

The fact that the hypocrisy was pointed out and even then ignored is astounding.
ETA: Or rather, it would be astounding if this wasn't Rapture Ready we are talking about.

No, I've pointed out hypocrisy to people and they just stare at you. The only answer you ever get is "but that's different", even if the only thing that is different is who it's happening to.

Pffft, it's rapture ready for fucks sake. Personally I'd be really surprised if they did see the hypocrisy, or at the very least didn't ignore it when somebody pointed it out.

I'm actually surprised people in that RR thread acknowledged that the scientists were right (or at least implied so by saying "authorities should have listened"). That seems like a large step for them. But then again, their response to the post on global warming cancels it out.

Honestly, the reason they don't see them as the same is probably because there's a group mentality thing going. They know evolution and global warming are wrong because there are people who say so! They're in a group of people who agree!
For stuff like this, however, there aren't huge groups of people to reinforce the opinion that seismologists or whatever are wrong. They're in a group of like-minded people, and don't question views that aren't the majority in that area (that's a danger everywhere though, no matter the community).
Anyway, it's hypocritical, but as long as there's a large enough group with similar views to join, it's easier to do that than to question the beliefs of a group you're part of.

My old Sunday school teacher, God bless her, tried to explain to me once why the Bible is infallible. The Bible say it's infallible, you see, thus it is. I pointed out that this was circular logic. She acknowledged that it was so. It didn't seem to faze her.
People are odd.

What is the deal with the prediction? I always heard scientists say they couldn't predict earthquakes, though they have been working on it and improved the last decade. Was this a real, precise prediction or a coincidence?

There might of been tremors, also they're using animal behavior now as a predictor.
They can't predict it to the day, but if there's tremors, they can say a big one is coming.
Then again, they've been telling Vancouverites that we're due for "The Big One" any day now for the last 30 years. It's in the newspaper on slow news days.
