I like that the video just uses a silhouette of a woman to her other mom. Wouldn't wanna give dem dirty ho-mos a face, then people might realize that they're people too. What if they couldn't get permission to use her face? It is possible, but do you think they even asked? "Hi. May we have permission to use your picture so we can portray you as an abomination against our lord?" |

I keep wondering whether the birth mother's religious conversion was simply a tactic to get the other woman completely out of her life and get free, extremely zealous legal help. People can do horrible things, even be horrible to their own selves (think "heartbreak haircuts"), after ending a long-term relationship.
I feel so sorry for that little girl, too. You know she'll flinch at the sight of a lawyer or a courtroom for the rest of her life! And all because her birth mother, who became her birth mother because another woman paid for the procedure, couldn't let her see her adoptive mother a few weeks out of the year!

To me, the sex of the other partner is 100% irrelevant. Custody battles are always ugly, but the courts should tackle this this one the same way as any other. (That is, the way they should handle it is the same way they should handle other cases, not necessarily the way they do.)
If it's true that Isabella (the girl) is afraid of Janet (the lesbian) then that's a pretty good reason not to give her unsupervised visitation. But needless to say, the fact that Lisa (the fundie) got Isabella to frown at silhouette in commercial doesn't exactly prove it. As always, the child's best interest and wishes should be the foremost concern.

And of course non-biological relations get the shaft TOO, so this other poor woman has basically a zero chance of getting any rights regarding her daughter. |

Unfortunately, custody cases almost always go in favor of the mother without much regard to other facts. Atheists and other non-Christians don't usually do so hot in such hearings either. And of course non-biological relations get the shaft TOO, so this other poor woman has basically a zero chance of getting any rights regarding her daughter. *nods* My wife's best friend is a bisexual atheist man with an 8-year-old daughter. He divorced his straight Catholic ex-wife four years ago. Until recently, he hardly ever saw his little girl at all--when it was his every other weekend, the mother would schedule urgent things she had to do instead. She put down restrictions like the daughter had to go to Mass (remember, he's atheist) or they couldn't watch NASCAR or hockey (which he's taught his daughter to love and which they bond over). And every time he tried to renegotiate, she would become Ms. Super Catholic and get the advantage ever single time. And yes, I know Super Catholics aren't supposed to get divorced and keep children away from their fathers. The judges would conveniently forget that. *sighs* I have met other Pagans with similar experiences as well. It's really quite awful. Then the fundies have the nerve to say how the law oppresses *them* and "judicial activism" works against them! |

Divorce laws in America are screwed up. On the one hand, the woman almost always gets the kids, regardless. On the other hand, mechanisms for enforcing the collection of child support seem to be almost non-existent (I know and have known several people who never saw a cent of child support because the man simply refused to pay it.) This shit be fucked up.
