Lucky Star would be a good starting point. It has alot of anime fanboy jokes but still funny to anyone not a fanboy. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is also good. It has some supernatural stuff in it. Its kinda like a day to day thing while crazy stuff happens without the main charcter noticing. (its hard to describe ) There's also Fruits Basket(people turn into animals) and Sister Princess (which is kinda a girly anime) Its kinda hard to recommend anime without going into the ones with the supernatural, monsters or giant robots. I love you simply for mentioning that one. Not just because I love it but also because you saved me the trouble of mentioning it myself. Yeah, its to bad they didn't make another season. I keep forgeting to read the rest of the manga and want to know what happens. Damn my laziness.

Code Geass and Elfin Lied had to be mentioned eventually. Didn't think it would be this late into the thread.

I think its because it doesn't really go with what he asked for. Hell, if it was just recommending good anime I would have a mile long list. lol

There was a thread like that on the last forum. I had a big long list posted. I felt like such a nerd.

If you can deal with a certain degree of (intentional) anachronisms then Samurai Champloo can be a lot of fun. Again, it probbably doesn't match the criteria you set out, but I've not seen much anime and 90% of what I have seen I hated. So Basically I'm just drawing out a list of general anime that I like over several posts

Azumanga Daioh - a slice-of-life series following a handful of high school girls and some rather childish teachers. The series aired as 5-minute skits on weekdays with the skits compiled into a half-hour show on the weekend, and so aside from a handful of theme episodes you've got a lot of little things bouncing about in each episode.
Lost Universe - a sci-fi comedy series done by the same folks who did The Slayers and thus includes a number of in-jokes. The series follows a trio of bounty hunters / mercenaries through odd jobs and other misadventures. There is indeed an overarching plot involving an organization known as Nightmare attempting to subvert the police force, but you've got a lot of one-shot stories scattered about.
Robot Carnival - an anthology movie whose nine parts (7 stories and a wrap-around) are all focused around robots. The parts range from the mindless (such as "Deprive") to the thought-provoking (such as "Presence"), with several other very good ones as well (such as "Starlight Angel" and "Cloud"). However, the movie was one of several imported by Streamline Pictures, who went bust in 1995; no one has picked up the rights yet, and so it's presently only available in the form of an Asian-manufactured bootleg with what appears to be a Chinese menu and crappy English subtitling.
Kurogane Communication - An adventure / drama series involving a 14-year-old girl named Haruka who appears to be the last human on Earth after a cataclysmic series of wars and natural disasters wiped everyone else out. She's being raised by a group of assorted oddball robots, who legitimately care for her but can't always express what they're feeling because most of them were never meant to be interacting with humans. The first 1/3rd of the series is slice-of-life in regards to what everyone has to deal with (including attacks by combat drones who still think that the war is going on), but the second 2/3rds involve the characters having to relocate after a tsunami and in the process finding evidence to suggest that Haruka isn't alone. Note that there is a small amount of nudity in this series owing to a hot springs sequence in one of the later episodes; Haruka convinces a female combat android named Angela to bathe with her so that they have an excuse to do "girl talk," and Angela's breasts - complete with nipples - are clearly displayed. Additionally, there's a few shots of a wrecked female hostess android whose shirt was ripped off during a fight with some combat drones.

And with Sky's TL;DR post about animes I'm sure very few people have heard of I feel like less of a nerd now.
Arcrow: Nappy was right in that Mormonism thread. Your sig is mezmorizing.

Hot cosplay chicks are always FTW, even if I have no idea who the character is. It only matters that they're simultaniously hot and geeks.

I would recommend Cowboy Bebop, as it's casual, doesn't have too much craziness (it's futuristic, but no robots n shit, just some cool jet planes). But a lot of it is dark. Also you wanted to watch it in Japanese, and everyone I have ever talked to agreed that Cowboy Bebop is one of the few instances that a dub is better then the original.
