A nice thought, but I doubt it will ever happen.

Germany and Japan kept on fighting WWII well after their armed forces had been decimated and their major cities reduced to rubble. Just because they haven't given up doesn't mean they haven't lost. The New York Times ran a good article on this that you can read here. Very interesting article. However, a key point the author made, and made many times, is the cyclical nature of the trend. In fact he said this ending the article "[h]istory is cyclical, and it would be foolhardy to assume that the culture wars will never return." While the religious right may very well be in retreat right now, but at some point in the future, they will rear their ugly heads again and relaunch the culture wars. What I meant with my snarky and poorly phrased comment was that. That at some point they will be back. More like an inchworm. Society crawls along, with the conservatives on the tail and the liberals on the front. Conservatism gets left behind, until a progressive revolution comes along and pulls them forward. Then society moves forwards again, gradually leaving conservatives behind. This was a pretty good article on the subject prior to the NYT article, which went into more depth. Gay marriage will, in 50 years or so, be a complete non-issue everywhere but in the minds of the most reactionary members of society. Abortion might stick around, but when the Religious Right makes its comeback down the road, most of the issues we're fighting for right now will be settled. The last progressive revolution was fought over civil rights. Racism may not be completely dead, but watch any politician's come crashing down if he even suggests that maybe we should bring back the separate water fountains.
