Or maybe it was a literal description because all they had to work with was that it was a immune deficiency that was only showing up in homosexual populations. And when it was first discovered, it was only in homosexuals. When more was found out, the name was changed to be more accurate. |

Later they saw it was in others, so the name was changed fir the sake of accuracy. Interestingly, the prevalence of AIDS in gays was a major factor in the rise of the modern gay identity. So while the name changed pretty quickly, within a year or two I think, already gay activists had been unified in a way that they had not before. |

(To bigots) Ever thought maybe the reason HIV is more prevalent in the gay community was because gay sex was negatively stigmatized and forced to go underground (which made it dangerous)? In similar ways to how teen pregnancy is higher in areas where sex is stigmatized as bad.
Maybenever is right though in that it drove the gay community into a new identity.
