Putting this here, since a lot are parts of different religions, some from folklore.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_species_in_folklore_and_mythology
And I can say, that by looking at these, Japan had some fucked up people to think this shit up.
Amefurashi-child like monster. Only the Japanese could screw up our idea of angelic, innocent children.
Betobeto san-Invisible spirit which follows people at night, making the sound of footsteps. They think up an entire entity just to explain this creepy experience everyone has from time to time?
Futakuchi onna-Woman with a second mouth on the back of her head. Just...why?
Harionago- Humanoid female with barbed, prehensile hair. One question. Are her pubes the same?
Hitotsume kozō-One-eyed child-like spirit. Apparently the ghost child they had wasn't freaky enough.
Hō ō-Rooster-swallow-fowl-snake-goose-tortoise-stag-fish hybrid. Um. Okay.
Jikininki- Corpse-eating ghost. Of course.
Kanbari nyūdō-Bathroom spirit. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Just please don't kill me.
Kesaran pasaran-Mysterious, white, fluffy creature. Sounds cute.
Konaki Jijii-Infant that cries until it is picked up, then increases its weight and crushes its victim. Oh, the children weren't enough. They got the babies, too.
Kudan-Human-faced calf which predicts a calamity and then dies. That just sounds...*hides*
Makura gaeshi-Pillow moving spirit. I think I have about five of these.
Miage nyūdō-Spirit which grows as fast as you can look up at it. Interesting.
Nikusui-Monster which appears as a young woman and sucks all of the flesh off of its victim's body. What's with Japanese ghosts and dead peoples' flesh?
Nukekubi- Disembodied, flying head that attacks people. That's actually just like a Native American spirit, but I can't remember the name of it.
Obariyon- Spook which rides piggyback on a human victim and becomes unbearably heavy. Ooooh. Shutter, anyone?
Sodehiki kozō- Ghost who pulls on shirt sleeves. What does he do when someone wears a sleeveless shirt?
Te no me-Ghost of a blind man, with his eyes on his hands. And Guillermo Del Toto said he made that up!
Toire no Hanakosan-Ghost who lurks in grade school restroom stalls. Is he a perv?
