Oh good fucking grief, please please please something such as this to the guidelines:
“If the web page contains comments and does not support linking to specific comments do not submit quotes from it!”
Because I am not searching through far too Yahoo News / Youtube comments to find you quote, especially when someone submits multiple quotes from the same page. Hopefully this would stem the tide of improper YouTube submission as well.

You can link to comments on Youtube now (I think).

You can link to comments on Youtube now (I think). Click the arrow next to 'Reply' to get a drop-down menu. Click 'Share' on that menu to get a direct link to the comment. (It will link to the video, but the comment will be the first one after the video, under the subheading "Linked comment".) Perhaps that should be added to the guidelines.

Sorry for the double-post, but I want to separate this idea from the previous one. Although you can direct link to Youtube comments, that takes them out of context if it's part of an ongoing discussion, so I'm sort of tempted to revise my opinion that direct linking would make it ok.

Ideally, I would love to permalink directly to quotes every time I submit a quote but in the case of sites like the RSTDT goldmine Sky News, sometimes that pushes the length of the URL beyond what the box on the submission form will accept.

Eh, it's alright, it's quite rare for the discussion around them to matter. At least for youtube quotes.

Now this I might be able to do something about, I owe at least one person a look over their code, I should be able to extend the submission field as well. Any idea just how long it gets?

This is a typical example, but not necessarily definitive: http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Hundreds-Of-Birds-Drop-Dead-In-Louisiana-After-Thousands-Were-Found-Dead-In-Beebe-Ark-Arkansas/Article/201101115879821#CommentKey:ddf3593b-7375-4e9c-82d3-b0950906271e I make that out to be 211 characters.

What about if we have people run it thru something like tinyurl.com?
