My family, a devout Anglican (Episcopalian for Americans,) has never kept the 'true' tradition of eschewing meat, but as a child, I was told to give up something for Lent. Usually it was something I enjoyed doing, that wasn't always that harmful, such as reading books (I was addicted to reading, still am today) Parents never told me Sundays didn't count though....bastards...

I decided to irritate people on Facebook and declared I had decided to take everything they were giving up and do more of it thus rendering their efforts worthless. Ahaha and such!

Mrs. Rookie's family is chock full of devout Catholics. So I had some work to do there. We have resolved to try a position a day from the Kama Sutra during Lent. That's our together thing. She is going to have a glass of wine (or other alcoholic beverage) every evening after the kids go to bed for forty nights. I am trying yoga at home every day for a little while. But that's not a Lent thing. It's mostly to keep up with the Kama Sutra thing.

Pft, Buddhist lent is longer (and not as widely practiced because it is longer.) ;D
I tried lent once. But I was cheating because I gave up gum even though I never really chew much gum anyways.

I once gave up candy for Lent when I was Catholic.
I do not do Lent anymore. My friend has proposed to give up porn.

I got strep throat today, so my dad treated me to a chocolate shake and some Hershey bars.
...I think I'll just give up swearing.

I'm giving up the entire practice of giving up. I'll see if that results in any interesting paradoxes.

I'm forced to not eat meat on Fridays, since mom's always home Fridays and didn't quite understand what I was telling her a year ago when I told her I. AM. NOT. CATHOLIC.
Trying to cut out red meat anyway, so that renders it slightly less annoying. It's when people ignore the old "fish or fowl" exception that I get touchy. I WANT MAH CHIKKINZ

Does bologna count as meat?

Considering bologna is comprised generally of pork and turkey, with a bit of beef, yes.
... I've been watching far too much 'How It's Made'

I know I've done it before, but can't for the life of me remember what it was I gave up.
Now lent's my countdown to offensive Easter jokes.

My family never celebrated Lent...it was a practice for those nasty Catholics, not fine, upstanding Protestants. Protestants, you see, don't give up anything for anybody! Except time, money, and rationality.
I was, however, pressured to fast on Sunday and Wednesday for a few weeks, for at least one meal. It's torture to try and focus on reading scripture with the smell of chicken alfredo wafting through the house.
