I don't really recall anyone ever talking about this game here, and a search turned up no hits. So... does anyone else play League of Legends? I've played it off and and on for a while, and generally have a good time with it. Those wondering what the hell it is should totally check it out using my referral link, so I get free stuff. It's a MOBA, or "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena". Essentially, it's Defense of the Ancients no longer constrained by WarCraft 3's game engine. Plus it's free to play. To those who do play, what are some of your favorite champions? Personally, Lux is probably my favorite. You just have to love peppy jailbait who can fire giant rainbow lasers.

My brother's playing it. I'm keeping away from it (like any online games) for fear of addiction.

My brother doesn't play it, but a few months ago he watched the trailer 850,000 times over the span of a couple weeks.
I've also never seen the appeal of Defense of the Ancients, but tons of people love it so I guess it's got something going for it.

I played the game's tutorial, played a single match against a bot, realized that I had no fucking clue what I was doing, and then stopped playing for a bit. I mean, I understood the target and the fact that I had a hero and stuff like that, and how the controls worked, but I had no idea how to play the game.

I've played a bit with my brother. Its okay.
It doesn't feel like the DOTA I remember, in that one you'd get a few different units that would actually build towers, rather than minions and one decked out hero character

In DOTA you only always control one character unless you are a unique case like Naga Siren or Meepo (the crazy kobold, i love him so much). And I think I'm the League of Legends guy on the boards. Unless someone has more than 1.3k games. I know Ironbite plays some too. But that's basically it. And Zach, I agree, the tutorial is complete crap. You need a good several games before you understand team roles, dynamics, character timing and junk like that. Most I can say is start up matchmaking (you get put on newbie island for your first several games) and get the hang of it. Experience is the best teacher. Single games aren't going to teach you more than the casting times of moves for characters, League is a team game. I think my favorite character in the game has to be Ability Power Kog'maw. Crazy long range, does damage early in the game, last hits all the time, and has a move that converts AP into tank-killing carry damage.

Olaf: The worth of man is measured by the length of his beard and the girth of his belt buckle.
tygerarmy on 'lol' too.
It's def a team game, and you have to learn a lot of characters to be really good, I usually go ` 1:1 KDR, my friend who went away was great, he knew how to adjust characters better depending on who he was fighting, I can beat noobs, but I do shitty against seasoned players.
edit:why does 'l' 'o' 'l' auto correct to lol when posted

I used to play, but fell away from doing so... because I knew almost no one else playing.

To be honest, I mostly prefer the mage characters in any game I play... ...But I don't even know what characters are mages and which ones are whatever

Here's a list of full mages:
Veigar, Cassiopeia, LeBlanc, Anivia, Brand, Annie, Kennen, Fiddlesticks, Karthus, Lux, Malzahar, Rumble, Kassadin, Heimerdinger, Orianna, and Swain.
List of partial mages:
Blitzcrank, Akali, Cho'Gath, Gragas, Jax, Mordekaiser, Morgana, Nunu, Sona, Soraka, Karma, and Vlad
List of people who's nonstandard build is mage:
Twisted Fate, Katarina, Kog'Maw, Teemo, Warwick, and Shaco.
List isn't exhaustive, these are just people I remember off the top of my head.

...how are Vlad, Sona, Soraka, and Karma only "partial" mages?
Vlad is a magical nuker. His only quirk is that he uses health to cast spells instead of mana.
Sona, Soraka, and Karma may be support characters, but they're definitely all mages.

Sona, Soraka, and Karma may be support characters, but they're definitely all mages. Because if sona, soraka, and karma are just full on nuking, then they are doing something wrong. Mages don't just build ap, they have to have nukes out the ass to qualify too (this is the difference between mage and support). And while Vlad can nuke, he's also quite a bit of a tank and doesn't quite have the raw nuking power that the others have; he trades it for survivability.

You're confusing the Mage tag with the Nuker tag. They're entirely separate things. Someone who heals with magic is no less a mage than the person throwing fireballs. The difference is, one's a nuker mage, and one's a support mage. But they're both equally mages. Plus Karma tends to work better as a nuker than a support anyway. People really have no clue how to fight with a Karma on their own team.

Well, I'll patch the game and give it another go then. I may want to play the tutorial again, though, because I've completely forgotten how to control the game.

So, has anyone else been paying attention to the championship games at Dreamhack?
I find it a little saddening, but not surprising, that both Asian teams were eliminated in the seeding matches. They just didn't have the experience of the more established US and EU teams.
