Is that where you put a coin in to unlock the cart? And then you get it back when you turn the cart back in?
Aldi does that in the US, with a quarter. it's a scheme to keep from having to pay someone to gather carts from the parking lot (you convince the user that it is in their best interest to return it to the front of the store)
ETA - ninja'd!

I was one of those poor bastards who gathered up the carts for $7 an hour. Sounds like another scheme by foreigners to take our jobs!
Also airports do that with baggage carts.

Does Aldi charge for plastic grocery bags? $0.10 for paper, $0.50 for plastic, and then they sell the hot/cold bags and totes for like $1 each. Any boxes you can scrounge from the racks are free.

Yep, I buy from Save-A-Lot (I'm poor) but you got the prices wrong, unless it's different in your area. It's $.5 for paper and $.15 for plastic. Also how come keyboards have the dollar sign but not a cent sign?

I'm pretty sure the paper bags in my area are 6 cents...dunno about the plastic ones, and yes the hot/cold bags are a dollar. I love brown paper bags. I've always wondered where the cent sign was, too

All the carts at Superstore are locked together. In order to get one out, you have to stick a loonie into a slot on the cart. You get the loonie back when you're done shopping, and stick the lock-thingie into another slot, which pushes it back out. It's to prevent people from stealing the carts/leaving them around the parking lot. Though they might be using toonies for it now. Not sure. They were also one of the first mainstream stores to start charging for grocery bags (which isn't horrible, as reusable bags are pretty cheap and it = less waste). Thus, the ever-so-subtle nickname, "Stupidstore". Edwards, which may or may not still be a chain in New England, used to do this. It was like a quarter, which seemed kind of dumb if it was to prevent theft.

Paper and plastic. Though you're welcome to bring your own bags. I like Price Chopper's policy. Instead of charging you for bags, they knock 3 cents off per bag you bring yourself.
