Crying infants are very very annoying, but the sound of nails on a chalkboard is still worse (at least to me). I have to agree with you on this one. Though, nails scratching over metal is even worse. The place we lived in when I was a preteen had a metal door instead of wood, and my brother used to rake his nails across it to annoy me. Just thinking about that sound makes me shudder. Ow.

Nah, for me the worst sound is steel wool on metal. I hate that sound so much

Cardboard rubbing against cardboard is a terrible sound.

Ugh, why do I keep reading this thread? The teeth-on-wool one in particular made me shudder.

I hate the sound of fingernails across any sort of fabric. Ugh. Nails on chalkboard, though, that's never really bothered me.

I had to try each and every one of those sounds... Ow. Whining wasn't that bad, but my example may have personal bias. Babies crying is the worst sound I've ever heard. Nails on fabric doesn't seem that bad. Makes a nice swiping sound to me... *fwipfwipfwipfwip*

Given the responses so far I think the study shows that whining is the most annoying sound on average. We all have specific sounds that we cant stand, however, whining is a universal sound while things like the chalkboard thing are not. personally for me it the sounds of cottonwool tearing.

I'd like to revise my answer: VELCRO. The sound of velcro ripping nearly causes me physical pain even thinking about it.

That sound is actually a little comforting for me.
