At school today, one of my fellow students made it blatantly clear that he was "interested" in me. Now, he's a nice boy, and I like him fine, but the thing that concerns me is that he told me he's not Muslim or Islamic, but he says he's Shiite... so...
Can anyone tell me what the hell the difference is?? I thought Shiite WAS from the Islamic faith? And if, IF (big if) I were to go with out him, would he wind up asking me to change my own religious faith? Do they have the same kind of views as Muslims and Islamics when it comes to women?
HELP!
Nightangel
Edit: Come to think of it, I should have put this in the religious thread... If one of the mods could please move it for me, I would appreciate it. Sorry, I wasn't thinking.

It's like how Catholics aren't Christian. He's Muslim, just from a different denomination. And if you want to know what he thinks, then ask him. There is a big difference between what a religion says members should do and what members actually believe.

Good point... I'm planning on talking to him tomorrow. I made the mistake of talking to my RC father and his immediate reaction was "stay the hell away from those people!!!!one11! Do you have any idea how they treat their women?" (Please note, my father is usually accepting and open to other faiths, but he just doesn't want any of his babies marrying one and possibly getting into trouble. I don't think he gets that I won't be forced to wear a burka here in Canada...)

Do you have any idea how they treat their women? Right. Because Catholicism, as we all know, is completely fair and balanced when it comes to women, and is never sexist in any way. Seconding the "asking him" bit. There's a lot of different sects of Shia within Shia, and different ways of interpreting them. So, just ask!

Shia is a sect of Islam (kind of like what Catholicism is to Christianity) so yes he is a Muslim. I would image that since Al Qaida and co are Sunni, he said this to avoid flak from the rather strong anti-Islamic sentiment that's going around, which is perfectly understandable. Of course, that's just speculation on my part.
That said though, I believe what the Koran says on Muslims and non-Muslims dating is that it's ok as long as the male is the Muslim. The logic being that when Islam and some other religion meet, Islam must dominate, in a relationship (technically marriage, but I believe it applies to any sort of monogamous romantic relationship) it's the man that does this, ergo, the man must be the Muslim. So no, you shouldn't have to convert or anything like that (or if you do, then simply play the heresy card). That's not to say all Muslim men are like that in practise, just that that's what's in the Koran.
That said though, everyone who's religious will pick and choose which rules to follow and which to ignore, so any religious bullshit you get from this fellow (if any) will be far more dependent on what sort of person he is than Islamic doctrine. So yeah, I say go for it and see how it turns out. It's the only way to know for certain eh?

I am shocked and disappointed you didn't suggest to whip it out.

That is only because: a)Nightangel (I'm assuming) doesn't have anything to whip out and b)I cannot contact Mr Muslim in order to tell him to whip it out.

I'm honestly not even sure what to think of him making a play for me (between caressing my hand and my face, and telling me "you're pretty cool for a girl", I can't think of any other term for it). The thing is, I like him fine, as a friend but I don't know if I could see the two of us getting together, and not just because of the religious aspect (although between my fathers opinion and my being Pagan, it certainly does play a pretty damn big role, sadly enough). I simply don't like him in THAT way, and I majorly SUCK at letting a guy down. I'm too fucking soft hearted and have this philosophy of "I don't wanna hurt him emotionally" but... dam nmit. *SIGH* Amandeep, why did you have to do this? >.<

Have you never heard of breasts? That doesn't exactly qualify as "whipping it out". "Whipping them out", on the other hand, works quite nicely.

If you don't like him "that way", then don't date him. Sparing his feelings temporarily will only hurt both of you more, in the end. Decide whether you want to date him, and worry about this afterward if necessary. Personally, I agree that you should whip them out, but eh.

I do not think you will find anyone on the planet who self identifies as Catholic, but doesn't self identify as Christian. Anti-Catholic low rent protestents like to claim Catholics aren't Christian, (and cite a bunch of half truths, distortions and outright lies to make their argument) so that they can persecute Catholics without worrying about that whole "Christians are supposed to be nice to one another" thing. Canada is a pretty secular country, so I doubt that religion means there what it means in, say, Saudi Arabia. That said, I have to echo Sleepy's comment. If you like him and want to date him-no. If you like him and want to go out with him, then enjoy! If religion is a sticking point for you and you don't want to, then don't. And definitely whip them out.
