Supporters of an overweight, red-headed Irishman have rallied behind him after he decided to quit as front-runner in a modelling competition after he was threatened and abused.

IT worker Roland Bunce, from Belfast, polled more than 60,000 votes to beat 5000 people in the first round of a competition to find the new face of clothes chain Next.

The 24-year-old's profile went viral and he was on course to become a fashion icon after making the final 250, but he announced overnight on his Facebook page that he was quitting the contest, The Sun reports.

"It was a big honour to win and it's been fun but the amount of abuse I've been getting since Thursday is out of control and I've now just been threatened," he wrote.
