There are biblical literalists who seriously think that the earth is flat, pi=3 and all the rest of it, how they live their daily lives in the real world is a complete mystery to me. I assume they don't ever venture out into the real world.
I did have someone who tried to tell me that it was beautiful that god made pi=3 rather than some messy irrational number. I had to point out that the beauty lay in the fact that it is a messy irrational number.

The reality is that there's a flat earth society even today. Your guess is as good as mine whether they really believe it or just want to be contrarians, but my sense is that at least some of them legitimately believe the Earth to be flat. No society is so advanced or learned that it does not breed ignorance as well. I actually ran into one, who honestly believed it. Sad thing is she was in training for becoming an Airborne Cryptologic Linguist in the USAF. Makes all of us in the US feel real safe and secure now doesn't it?

"Mr. President, our cryptographic corps has deciphered the transmissions of the enemy. It seems they'll be sneaking around the flat underside of the Earth and will strike at us from the west."
