Me too. It says a lot about our culture that jurors regularly have less than no idea about how catching criminals works. At least if they were actually ignorant they wouldn't have as many dangerous preconceptions, but instead they have made-for-TV ideas of criminal investigation. I heard that some court cases are actually starting to screen out potential jurors who regularly watch crime dramas like CSI in order to prevent the case being ruined by false notions on how this stuff actually works.

That's probably for the best. I hope that's true.

So next time I have jury duty (although I never made it to the actual courtroom) I'll claim I love CSI even though I hate it.

I actually keep hoping I'll get jury duty just so I can put my own criminal justice knowledge into practice. the REAL knowledge, not the prime time crime TV knowledge.

Hate to tell you, but you will be dismissed from every jury you are ever called for. For that exact reason - you know how the criminal justice system works. I've never been called for jury duty, and I know if I ever am, I will be dismissed before my chair gets warm.

So the guy's 'peer' happens to have some education under their belt. Nothing says that I can be disqualified for it. At least nothing that I can find. In fact, during my class my instructor mentioned it a few times about how he'd been on the jury before even though he's a former cop.

(On Vene's comic)
I take issue with the MythBusters one. They DO use control groups.

To my knowledge, a lawyer can have a potential juror recused during voir dire for just about any reason, if he can convince the judge and/or opposing counsel.

At least nothing that I can find. There are a lot of lawyers out there who will see that as a liability, and try to keep you off a jury. No law or regulation against it, but it would depend on the case and whatnot.

The thing is, lawyers prefer stupid juries. It sounds harsh, but they prefer it that way. They prefer juries they can get to believe anything, and that is a serious problem.

Stupid doesn't work like that. Stupid people are actually less likely to change their preconcieved (often bullshit) views than intelligent people.

I seem to recall OJ Simpson getting off despite the DNA evidence. The defense lawyer (Barry Shek?) was always crowing that HIS DNA laboratory was the world's #1, when in fact it was not rated at all. As a result he destroyed the careers of several good lawyers and at least 1 good judge, through his unending egotistical BS. DNA evidence is not perfect, but is the sharpest tool in the shed. Inaccuracies stem from collection, pollution and storage, and it was the storage that was the issue that seeded the shadow of doubt in the OJ case.

To my knowledge, a lawyer can have a potential juror recused during voir dire for just about any reason, if he can convince the judge and/or opposing counsel. Each side can dismiss a certain number without giving a reason (the exact number based on local rules of procedure). There are a few reasons that a juror cannot be dismissed (i.e. race, gender), but that's about it. And the attorney doesn't even have to convince the judge or opposing counsel (unless one of them raises the question that the juror is being dismissed for an invalid reason).

By playing on their emotions, their prejudices, whatever. They want stupid people...who are already on their side.
