I think at most Musto was trying to be funny, and failed at it.

To be fair, anyone who's had plastic surgery is prodded at for being fake, examples being the Office mini-arc where the office shows great disapproval for Jan's breast implants and the endless ribbing of Joan Rivers' numerous facial surgeries.

I don't think Olbermann meant any offense, and it was Musto who made the bad joke. Nothing in the past would indicate that Olbermann is a bigot, and he's pretty openly for gay marriage and LGBT civil rights. Such is his special comment about Proposition 8. It seems anytime anyone rails against the LGBT ommunity getting the same right, he's right there railing them back and proving how wrong they are. It was a joke in bad taste, no doubt, but such is the state of live TV--you can't always control what your guest is going to say. And I think we've all laughed at a joke that was distasteful before realizing how distasteful it was. I honestly do think there was no harm, and while that doesn't meant a lot, I don't think any offense was meant.

musto is a serious douche.
on olbermann, iv never seen him say anything (good or bad) on trans issues but i think that its pretty likely that he's as far liberal as to believe in equality for LGB people but not that far with the T (like quite a lot of people), remarks like mustos wouldnt have been allowed about someones race or sexuality.
the surgery that transpeople get is not vanity-based plastic surgery like joan riivers and so many others get. its the equivelant of the surgeries that seperate siamese twins or correct cleft lips.

Again, I just think it was an oversight; a bad one at that, but I don't think any harm was meant. Obviously it was caused some, but I think calling the man a homophobe is a bit on the extreme side of things. I don't think Olbermann's a homophobe, like, AT ALL. Turn on Hannity or O'Reily or Limbaugh if you want homophobia.
It was a stupid, silly joke, and maybe Olbermann was wrong for not speaking up, but I really don't think he's bigoted or anything. In fact, he seemed kind of uncomfortable when Musto went off on that whole rant, it's not as though he guffawed or anything. Just a wee bit of a misunderstanding is all.

i dont recall calling olbermann a homophobe, i certainly dont think he's a homophobe. i think he could very well be transphobic (which isnt the same thing), certainly if he thought transphobia was as harmful as racism or homophobia he would have called musto on what he said (even though the twat was clearly trying to get a laugh)

how very cheap that a gay man has to get laughs out of a homophobe by making her out to be trans. Did I miss read that bit? (asking seriously, not sarcastically)

Yeah, but most "fake" comments don't enter the realm of "cutting her penis off." I'm sure Musto was tyring to be funny, as was said before. But a lot of the time he tries to be funny, it comes off as tasteless. This isn't the first time I've wanted to smack him with a shovel; but it's probably the closest to home.... Musto strikes me as that one guy you know, be it in high school, at the office, or whatever, who always goes one step too far. He may not be bad, but he always comes off as an asshat.

Re: Transexuality: The need for treatment is emphasized by the high rate of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and various addictions, as well as a higher suicide rate among untreated transsexual people than in the general population.[45] These problemsmay be alleviated by a change of gender role and/or physical characteristics.[46] --- This may not be as immediately detrimental or even as inherently life threatening, but please don't tell me it's not serious, or that it's vanity oriented like most cosmetic surgery is.

I don't care if people do that surgery, but I honestly don't see a serious need for it, I mean your sexual organs aren't a disease that need to be "treated."

So having the wrong hormones flooding your endocrine system doesn't need to be treated? Do you realize how much the wrong hormones can fuck up a person's brain? Do you want a list of all the problems, primarily mental and social but also physical, that can come about through having the wrong genitalia? It does impede a person from properly living their life, on a constant daily basis.
And seriously? Saying SRS isn't necessary for some people is like saying homosexuals don't need the legal protections and privileges of marriage, or that the "cure" for depression is to "just get over it."
And I refrain from saying any more about this right now cause I'm just too emotional about this topic.
