Interestingly enough, I saw news reports about the repeal. The day after it took effect.

My history teacher, who is awesome, was hearing a lot of his students saying how if DADT is repealed, then gays will harass straight men in the military. He just said, "There's been a lot of honorable men discharged from the army just because they were gay. These people volunteer to fight for a country that won't even let them marry, and this is how we repay them?" Another time a girl said that if gay marriage was legalized, then it would be a slippery slope to legalizing bestiality, and OMG WHERE WILL IT STOP? ?? And Awesome Teacher said, "You know, after I get home from work on Friday, I drink a margarita or two. Do you think I'm going to be shooting up heroin when I get back to class?"

@ Wykked: I think your history teacher and one of my former english teachers would get along fabulously. He was the same way with his students.

We shouldn't congratulate the government for getting rid of something that never should have been there in the first place.
Jackasses. About fucking time.

True, but we should congratulate the government for getting rid of something that could have been there for a lot longer. Demonize Clinton and Bush for sustaining it if you'd like - they'd deserve it - but remember that Obama's the one who got rid of it, not the one who started it.

Hey, just remember that DADT was an improvement over the existing blanket ban. Sometimes progress just has to take baby steps, unfortunately.
I am in no way saying that DADT was ever a good thing, mind you. Just that it was the lesser evil. Which, of course, is still evil. Just lesser.

The problem is that Clinton could have simply, uh, integrated the armed forces by executive order. That's how Truman did it with black soldiers back in the '40s. He wouldn't have needed approval for it. He's the Commander-in-Chief, after all.
Now, of course there are some political considerations with such actions, and I tend to favor phased implementation rather than immediate directive by fiat; but Clinton could have easily handled the storm. I think DADT was in some ways worse than doing nothing, because it actually did nothing while creating the impression (among some people) that something had been done. It was like prayer, basically.

I always suspected there to be something a bit odd about Master Chief.
