I'll try to simplify this so that it can be understood by anyone. Think of the genome as a recipe. Let's say, a recipe for pita pizza things, since I have one on hand.
Now, if I were to duplicate one of the instructions, like, say, the one with cheese, I would end up with...
And end up with a cheesier pizza. Now, lets take another recipe for tiropetes. The last instruction for it is "Bake for 12-14 minutes". If we were to duplicate that, you would end up with charred triangles barely suitable for human consumption. This is also a mutation. I hope this has cleared things up.
