Also, can you please please please vote for this idiot? It's give the rest of us a hearty laugh if she got into office. No. In fact, this post has pretty much proven my hypothesis that those of you in the rest of the world just like watching the US fail. Well, don't think we're gonna take that sitting down. The US has been taking many failures sitting down for quite some time now. The last eight years are the first thing that come to mind.

I believe that most Europeans want USA to succeed in going out of a crisis, even if only to make our own situation better.
Too bad it's many of Americans believe their own government is bad and do everything to break it (*cough* Republicans *cough*), so their own sponsors don't have to pay taxes.
For over 2 years, almost every time I hear about US politics, I facepalm. I live in Poland, and my country has had its own history with oligarchy taking over ( the result was that Poland disappeared for 123 years from the political map of Europe: the oligarchs didn't want to pay taxes or support king's army and blocked all attempts to modernize country - or do anything that threaten their grip on Poland - while the neighbours centralized themselves and built up large and modern armies). It was not a coincidence that Polish serfs had to wait for the 19th century to be freed from the serfdom (and it was the countries that taken over the Polish territory that freed them).
In other words, if you want to live in a backwards country with the ruling class being as patriotic as Polish oligarchs (that sometimes openly worked for the enemies of Poland) and lower classes being stripped out of their rights and treated worse than animals, vote for the ones who want to give rich more power and relieve the rich from the governmental oversight. [sarcasm] Because it worked so well for Poland. [/sarcasm]
ETA: I am not an expert in this part of Poland's history so I am not certain that the reasons above were the main reasons of Poland's fall (other important ones were certainly wars with Russia and Sweden in 18th century). But the inflexibility and weak points of the Poland's democracy for nobility certainly didn't help.

My God... does her brain just pick random tidbits from history class and mash them together whenever she opens her mouth? Seriously, how can anyone BE so stupid? I really really hope she's just trolling us at this point. No one could possibly be this ignorant... She has to remember only random tidbits. If she knew the full story of the Cuban Missile Crisis, she would have to admit that JFK handled the situation well by taking the less hawkish approach. Giving credit to a Democrat like that would violate her worldview. It's the same reason she can say that the South was right in the Civil War, yet blast the Democrats for being the party that founded the Klan. Bullshit. Kennedy buggered up by putting nukes in Turkey ranged on Moscow and the Soviets called his bluff by putting some in range of Miami as deterrence. And he almost killed everyone in his unwillingness to remove the Turkish nukes (before he backed down).

But the inflexibility and weak points of the Poland's democracy for nobility certainly didn't help. Poland's lesson is that bipartisanship isn't actually a good thing. If bipartisanship is the ultimate moral law, then your neighbour can just bribe one member of the congress and you can't do anything- since Poland's government required total unanimity to act, one guy can block anything. Same deal with the Democrats. If they feel they need Republican votes in order to build 'legitimacy' through bipartisanship, then nothing will be done. But yeah. Poland's position was not sustainable. They got luck from 1618-1700, where their major neighbours killed each other in a ridiculously bloody war (33% death rate in effected areas). Poland, which was not involved, sat around smugly and were happy and prosperous. But new nations emerged (Prussia, Russia) and the Holy Roman Empire eventually recovered. And then Sweden invaded, as you said- and, even worse, Sweden got beaten by a resurgent Russia, as did the Ottomans. So there was nothing stopping the Three Bad Guys from eating up Poland in the middle of continued wars between themselves.

Okay, historical error on my part, I thought that the missiles had been placed in Turkey late in the Eisenhower Administration. I was off by a year or two. My bad. Having said that, a Democrat still rightly took a dovish approach to foreign policy which prevented a catastrophe. Admittedly, he was only reversing the course of early hawkish actions, but he did not have to do that. What do you think LBJ or Nixon (or Bachmann for that matter) would have done in his shoes? They would have refused to back down, and quite possibly overseen nuclear Armageddon. Though the Kennedy Administration deserves blame for creating the situation, they also deserve credit for stopping it before it crossed the point of no return.

I believe Bachmann would hit the big red button without a second thought. Or even a first thought.
