Last year we had a thread dedicated to HP Lovecraft and all his cute, household monstrosities. I thought I'd bring it back for October, so people can talk about their favorite Lovecraft stories, creatures, etc. I added the 'Friends' part for those who are fans of Lovecraft's peers as well (Kuttner, Ligotti, Derleth, etc.).
For myself, my favorite stories would be;
Pickman's Model Cool Air The Hound The Cats of Ulthar The Terrible Old Man The Thing on the Doorstep
The Invaders (where Kuttner introduces the awesome Voorvadoss!)
The Prodigy of Dreams (where Ligotti introduced the also-awesome Cynothoglys!)

"The Colour Out of Space" was the first Lovecraft story I ever read, and I was so scared I didn't sleep for the rest of the night or the night after. In terms of short, to the point, punchy impact, I think you can't go past "In the Vault" "The Whisperer in Darkness" scared the living shit out of me.

I read Pickman's Model when I was about eight or nine, and it stuck with me for years.

When I got my Kindle, one of the first e-books I picked up was "The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft." Not sure which one is my favorite.
As an aside, my fiancee crochets and sells Cthulhus wearing a t-shirt. They are a huge hit at the local gaming store, and several people have been requesting specific color combos. (Most often, the colors of one of the in-state colleges or the colors of the local pro sports team.)

Cthulhu got his ass handed to him by a boat.

Just bought myself the complete works of Lovecraft for $5. I do hope it'll be money well spent.

I've always had a great love of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth." Plus, there's a catchy song. "The Dunwich Horror" is also quite creepy. Avoid the SciFi movie version like the plague, though. Also, Poe: "Berenice" wins for sheer Body Horror. "Ligaea" has always been a favorite of mine, for reasons I can't quite discern. "The Pit and the Pendulum" still gives me the most delightful chills up and down my spine.

"The Dunwich Horror" is also quite creepy. Avoid the SciFi movie version like the plague, though. You mean the pseudo-porno one? Yeah, I learned that the hard way (no pun intended). I'm thinking of picking up the Call of Cthulhu movie (the one made to look like a classic one), since it's described as being true or at least close to the original story.
