Doesn't requiring the showing of documentation based solely on the suspicion that someone is a foreigner make it a requirement for citizens to carry identification papers, and isn't doing the latter part illegal? Real citizens are white and talk like it.

Celeste said he disagrees with the laws saying that police can use racial profiling or other extremely questionable methods, although I don't know what he'd consider to be "legitimate reasons" for suspicion.

He's saying that if a legitimate traffic stop, arrest, or other occasion where you are required to provide the police with identification yields evidence that a person's immigration status may be in doubt (foreign ID with no passport, etc), then the suspect should be treated as a possible illegal immigrant until such time as their immigration status has been established.

I agree with this completely. While I agree that carrying around ones passport is dangerous, as loosing ones passport especially in a foreign country is a huge screw up, it does not change the fact that while in a foreign country you will need to be able to identify yourself and your country of origin.

Thank you, this is exactly what I meant. I'm talking about situations where anybody -- even American citizens -- would have to show their ID to a police officer anyway.
Agreed.

There goes anyone north of the Mason Dixon line! In Alabama, they still sell T-shirts that say "Keep the South beautiful: Buy a Yankee a bus ticket."

There's also the swastika hats and stickers (only in the really bad places, though.) and the confederate flag shirts that say "It's not hate, it's heritage!" on the back. I actually have a relative that owns one of those...it scares me.

Irony: When what actually happens is different from what is expected to happen.
The purpose of immigration laws according to some: To keep people from profiting off of the country's resources without giving back to it, to open up jobs for the citizens.
What happened here: The exact opposite of that.

What happened here: The exact opposite of that. I dunno, some of these tycoons profit off of the country's resources without giving back to it. And it'll open up a spot for a citizen to start his own car sale. I'd say it's working as intended.

Okay, the first incident was following the law. As stupid as the law was, it was at least followed. The trouble over that incident merely showed the hypocrisy of those that pushed for it.
But what the hell was the rationale for the second incident, if that guy had all the proper documentation?
