The Pope has again shown how deeply in touch he is with the sentiments of the world at large. So the problem wasn't pedo priests, it was the fault of a time which produced flared trousers and the handlebar mustache!

It probably seems to be “considered more and more normal by society” to him because it is in his echo chamber.
Meanwhile, in the real world, people are so profoundly and deeply disgusted by pedophilia to the point that the mere accusation of molesting a child can ruin a person’s entire life.

Ratzinger, is there something you wish to tell us?

I think I saw this exact story but by a different source a while ago.
Pope, you weird.

Yeah, pedophillia being so normal is why the Church’s name has been so disgraced by the recent molestation scandals.

So this guy (I refuse to give him any special title) is trying to justify his priests' child molestation by saying it was all OK 40 years ago. No, honest! Back then, everyone did it! I know I di - I mean, It's not my fault at all!
(Not really relevant in this case, but it IS important to remember the distinction between paedophilia and child molestation.)

You know what else people did a long time ago? They denied people rights based on their skin colour. And they denied people rights based on their genitals. They horribly executed innocent people on charges of 'witchcraft' for which there was no evidence. It used to be normal for the bulk of the population to be functionally or totally illiterate.
Pedophilia has never been the norm--except for possibly in ancient Greece--but even if it WAS that wouldn't make it any more acceptable just because people did it a long time ago.

Witch burnings in the 1970's? What?

Witch burnings in the 1970's? What? You're forgetting that the Catholic Church still thinks the Middle Ages were "recent". It took them 350 years to apologize for what they did to Galileo, and they still have never said that any of the abuses of the Renaissance Popes were unjustified.

You guys are missing his point. He's not trying to say it's a relic of the past, he's trying to say it's becoming more relevent because of the outside culture. In other words, it's the typical "Everyone else is evil & the church is just affected by it" argument.
Hey, at no point did I say his actual point wasn't even more disgusting.

Wait, wait, wait... society is to blame for kiddie porn, therefore the Church isn't responsible for its hand in covering up known sex abuse?
Wait, what?
WHAT?
Even assuming that society DID somehow turn perfectly nice men in seminary school into raging kiddie-fiddlers, the Church STILL kept them employed, bought or outright ordered the silence of the victims, covered up the crimes, protected the perpetrators, and allowed them more access to children. Even if the sinful world was responsible for MAKING them kiddie-diddlers, the Church is STILL at fault for allowing them to STAY kiddie-diddlers and spending a lot of time and money making sure everything was covered up.
As an aside, looking at the picture of Emperor Popatine, are there ANY pictures of this guy that AREN'T scary or creepy or freakish? I don't think I've ever seen a photograph of him, even a carefully posed photograph, in which he didn't kinda freak me out a bit.
