Only when it's convenient. RR uses the same kind of rhetoric. Half of the time, they'll talk about how they're not of the world, the other half they'll talk about how it's impossible to be unaffected by the world.
Point is, this isn't anything new, it's part of their ongoing campaign to try & make it everyone else's fault.

Wait, wait, wait... society is to blame for kiddie porn, therefore the Church isn't responsible for its hand in covering up known sex abuse? Yeah. That just shows how completely the Church is missing the point. It wasn’t a scandal because there was a run of pedophile priests. It was a scandal because the Church covered the whole fucking thing up.

I seriously do wonder if the Church has any idea WHY the world is so mad at them, or if they're genuinely unaware of it--or, alternatively, they could be aware of it but choosing to ignore it and ending up eyeball-deep in cognitive dissonance.
We're not mad that there were pedophiles in the ranks--it happens, especially in an organization as huge as the Catholic Church. Pedophiles turn up in the medical community, the legal community, the teaching community, and others that are otherwise quite respectable and none of those have had a sex abuse scandal anywhere NEAR the calibur of this one because THEY DIDN'T COVER IT UP. We're disgusted and angry because they consistently and deliberately covered up the crimes and silenced the victims and then relocated the priests and gave them access to MORE victims--and kept doing this for over HALF A CENTURY and quite probably even longer than that. (No one is alive anymore to tell us if there were kiddie-diddling priests back in the early 1900s.)

Well, hey, the medical community, the legal community, & the academic community don't claim to be flawless.

Notice that part that this lady added in the last sentence. Despite the dumb-ass excuse, as well as many other bullshit things the pope has said (condoms and the spread of aids, for example), she somehow still has enough respect to call him a "brilliant man."

The pope's not as briliant as she thinks he his.

This Pope is what is called a transitional pope (I learned that in RCIA) which means that he is a "temporary" or short term pope and due to his age he will croak soon. When that happens then there will be a long term pope.
Hopefully the Conclave will be smart enough next time around and actually elect a pope that will be conscientious enough to put a stop to this and actually get justice.

And who guarantees Benedict’s successor doesn’t pull a John Paul I, dying a month into his term?

I could see Benedict living into his 90s (he's 84 now, if my math is correct) but he'll probably die within the decade. That being said, I doubt that his successor would really do anything about the sex scandal considering that the Pope is far from the only high-ranking member of the Church who was responsible for the cover-up.

I wasn’t suggesting it was likely. But it could happen. The point is how stupid it is to declare someone a “temporary placeholder” when that someone has a life term. Even people in frail health have been known to hang onto life far longer than the doctors and actuaries predicted. Conversely, you never know when your “permanent” candidate will get run over by a bus or suffer an out-of-the-blue aneurysm.

Church has the technology to keep someone living indefinitely. Ironbite-at least if you listen to certain conspiracies.
