And this one is both useless and harmful, rather like douches. I, [candidate name], pledge to the American people that if elected President, I will:
[...] establish a presidential commission on religious liberty to investigate and document reports of Americans who have been harassed or threatened for exercising key civil rights to organize, to speak, to donate or to vote for marriage and to propose new protections, if needed. It's useless (there already are protections based on religion) and harmful (because it means they'd probably go after anyone who wasn't a straight Christian). And stupid. Have I mentioned stupid? www.addictinginfo.org/2011/08/16/three-gop-presidential-candidates-sign-pledge-to-investigate-lgbt-community/

While a pledge like this is just stupid, wouldn't it be illegal for the candidate to actually follow up on this pledge?

Yeah, pretty much. Just exactly as illegal as the last one. But also moreso highly unethical. But people like Vaan Der Plaats (it was him again, right? I didn't read the article, but I'm guessing) really have a screw loose. I mean you'd have to to get 3 Iowa judges ousted for doing their jobs correctly.

If I'm reading this pledge right, it's meant to isolate one segment of the population with the purpose of "helping" an already privileged one.
Yeah, fuck that shit.

When do election pledges ever materialise anyway?

When do election pledges ever materialise anyway? They're being an issue right now with basically every member of the GOP having signed a pledge saying 'no new taxes ever.'

When do election pledges ever materialise anyway? They're being an issue right now with basically every member of the GOP having signed a pledge saying 'no new taxes ever.' As I understand it, it isn't just "no new taxes ever", but "no tax increases ever" as well. A lot of those that have signed the pledge are starting to regret it. But the lobbyist that came up with the pledge, Grover Norquist, has vowed, in so many words, to campaign against any Republican that either won't sign the pledge or rescinds the pledge. And as 60 Minutes reported recently, he's got enough power behind him that it has most of them scared to cross him. ETA: As for this new pledge in the OP, I can see Rick Perry and Michelle Bachman signing it without hesitation. Both of them impress me as being sufficiently stupid enough to hop right on it.

My favorite part is how their definition of “new tax” includes letting a temporary tax cut expire—but only if said tax cut was for the rich.

Why do I have the sinking feeling that if Obama gets reelected, Norquist will mount a coup d'état... and actually have the support of Congress?

Someone should plant a fuckton of gay porn on Norquist's computer. And then accidentally e-mail it to the entirety of Congress.
