I had an idea. It would be interesting (to me anyway) to conduct a demographic survey of FSTDTers. We could include thing like age, gender (with more than 2 options, of course), education level, occupation, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, etc. The results would be anonymous, of course.
For one thing, when idiot fundies say things like "All you FSTDTers are gay atheist pagans!" we would actually have something to point to, to say "Nope, we're only X% atheists and Y% pagans," or whatever. The fundies are obviously idiots either way, but it's that much more fun when you can pwn them with verifiable data.
Anyway, what are everyone's thoughts? Would you be interested? What questions should we include? Should the answers be fill in the blank, multiple choice, or a combination of the two?

Sounds like a fun idea actually. I think fill in the blank is really the best idea, we have so much diversity here that it'd be hard to ensure everyone was counted in a multiple choice. Although how would we go about polling it anonymously?

I figured that members would submit their answers directly to whoever was compiling the survey via PM, and then he/she would compile the answers and publish them anonymously.

Good idea. I'm in favor of sharing anything except names and exact addresses. John, look for a new exalt heading your way for the idea.

Of course, well all know that fundies very rarely respond well to quantifiable statistics and valid evidence. They only see what they want to see.

Excellent idea. I think it'd be neat to see where we are getting our members from.
If there is anything I could do to help, let me know.

So here's a sample list of questions. Let me know if there's anything important I missed, or if I've included anything you don't like.
* Age * Gender * Location (country, state) * Religion (or lack thereof) * Political orientation * Sexual orientation * Relationship status (too personal?) * Education * Occupation

I wouldn't say relationship status is too personal. It's just another stat about us.

In this bunch, relationship status isn't too personal, though it can be complicated. I think that sounds like a fascinating study, really.

Is there a way to make filling in relationship optional? Also maybe add city to country and state. Other than that, you nailed it.

Your questions seem fine. I'd like to figure out how to get the regular people on the main page, without it being overrun by idiots trying to skew the numbers.

How can I be sure you're not going to use the information so the government can spy on me?!?!?! [/sarcasm]
Anywho, what about ethnicity? Not trying to discriminate or anything, but it is a common factor in a census.

Maybe Distind can have it integrated into our profiles, that way it can be updated and you can tell if the person is a regular or not.

Distind can't do that. At least, not here. It might be possible on the new forums, but Proboards does not offer him the tools for such a thing.
Additionally, relationship status seems logical if one of the goals of this information is to be used in response to accusations by religious fundamentalists.
ETA: Technically, the whole thing is optional, FYI.
