But remember there's no such thing as a fundie Buddhist. Or so I keep getting told. Oh you've been told very wrong, but I'm guessing you already knew that. I wonder what they're going to blame for this? I mean it's not their fault they take a kid from his family and force him to grow up like POW. I mean I'm a Buddhist and I find that whole idea stupid! I'm only surprised it hadn't happened before. I hope the kid's new direction (going into film) works out for him. I heard of a Buddhist monk who threw a little girl out in the snow once. Of course, that could have just been a rumor.

Zen here as well, and although I think highly of Master Dogen, I don't really identify with Shoto, Rinzai, Ch'an, or any other specific sect. As for Buddhist terrorist, there was that group in Japan (I can't remember the name but I'll try and find it) that gassed a subway because they thought they were helping to bring upon the Apocalypse. Something about the leader got a vision while meditating, and instead of realizing that it was just his mind trying to keep him focusing, he thought he had gained ultimate wisdom and could see the end of the world. That sect is Aum Shinrikyo[/quote] Very true! +1 Karma

Tibet was actually a pretty brutal theocracy pre-China. I'm not white-knighting the Chinese by any means, but Tibet under the monks wasn't a magical land of unicorns and blowjobs either.

Yeah, the whole peace-love-and-mung-beans thing only became a major part of Tibetan Buddhism after the invasion, when the upper circles needed to court public opinion in liberal western democracies.

At least after their leader was killed, the members did their part in trying to make ammends to the family of those victims.
