I was watching Discovery Channel this morning and there was a commercial for Scientology at every commercial break. Yes... on Discovery Channel T_T. This was the first time I've ever seen them advertise their religion. Usually the Mormons are the only ones I see with commercials. Is this a new thing or have I just been missing this?

I don't watch TV, so I couldn't tell you, but I did have to say "no, thanks" to a Hindu proselytizer the other day. First one I've ever come across.
Yes, I know, completely unrelated, but my brain somehow connected that to your post.

It was like, "Everyone experiences love, happiness, tragedy, loss. Everyone has the same emptiness in their lives. An emptiness that can only be filled with... the truth. Scientology."

There used to be a lot of commercials for Dianetics when it first came out, back in the 80's or early 90's, I believe.

Yeah, I saw those, too. Rather odd commercials that play on peoples emotions. So in that regard, it's no different than any other brand of religious message.

Yeah, they used to run a ton of those on WSBK out of Boston while I was watching cartoons. I mean, I don't know how many kids were subscribing to it, but we're talking Galaxy Rangers, Silverhawks, and Thundercats. Not the greatest market. I hadn't seen any ads, even from the Mormons, since then, until a couple years ago. Who was it that was doing the "Jesus Christ didn't turn people away, and neither do we?" Ads? United Church of Christ or something? About the same time those came out, I started noticing LDS ads again. Maybe they'd always been there, but I wasn't waching the "right" shows.

I started saying something negative about drug companies this morning, and my mom expressed concern that I was sounding like a Scientologist. I had to reassure her that I'm never going to fall for that bullshit. Her father was a Scientologist, you see. That's why she worries.

I just believe the for-profit model is anti-human.

I'm in the middle of reading Bare-Faced Messiah www.xenu.net/archive/books/bfm/bfmconte.htm so this is relevant to my interests. There used to be a lot of commercials for Dianetics when it first came out, back in the 80's or early 90's, I believe. Dianetics came out in 1950, Scientology in 1952. But yeah, I remember the commercials...

I remember Dianetics commercials. It was something along the lines of, "find out how the human mind really works," or something like that. I bought it, but I don't remember actually being able to get through it. Given my propensity as a pack rat, I might even still have it, somewhere.

We've got LDS ads infesting prime time TV down under...
I just gag, say 'bullshit', and look for something else to watch.

"I am a doctor who is forced to chose between pointless, archaic, barbaric surgeries and ridding my patients of their evil thetons that make them ill."
"I am a mother who is helpless against her children being taught L. Ron Hubbard was just an author."
Sorry, that just never gets old.

I've seen 'em on all the commercial channels at one time or another. Haven't seen any for a couple of years now, though. I'm kind of glad, because they REALLY pissed me off.
