I haven't followed this issue very closely, but it seems like people (mostly republicans) are shitting their pants over this. Why? From what I've seen it looks like they've accepted that Gitmo is being shut down, and now they're just complaining about where they're going to go. Do they think if these people are put in a supermax prison that they're going to escape? Do they think the town around the prison is going to attract terrorist cells, conspiring to break out their buddies? What are the honest concerns of the opposition other than, "Not in my back yard!"?

Honest? Nah. Giving into paranoia like everything they've done over the last decade, oh yeah.
The USA has demonstrated a wonderful ability to keep part of its population incarcerated. To say Gitmo detainees can't be kept in America is to not put faith in the system that already holds over 1% of the American population, with few if any breakouts annually.
Yes I went there.

When this came up a while ago, I was asked if it's not such a big deal, would I like it if they were moved in next door to me. I couldn't stop laughing at how irrational that was

From what I understand, the fear is that if the detainees are moved to a prison here in the States then there's a risk that they might escape or - if allowed into general - spread their brand of militant Islam among the inmates.
IMHO, though, if let into general there'd be greater odds of the detainees getting shanked than anything else.

I think it's fear. Pure and simple. It's been a common tactic for years now. I always get a chuckle out of the folks who don't want to live right next to a prison. Do you honestly think that if a prisoner actually manages to escape, he or she is going to cause a ruckus right next to the jail? No...they are going to run and try to get as far away as fast as possible.
People think these "terrorists" are like super ninjas that can skulk around in the shadows and shoot solid shotgun slugs from their rectums...They are just desperate religious fanatics that have been pushed to these acts of violence. These aren't special forces...Just regular people from a war torn region of the world.
I read another commenters note that they likely wouldn't survive in general pop and I have to agree with them. The chances of survival in any regular prison are very, very slim.

What Skyfire says. Can't have them dirty brown people spreading their false religion and turing a bunch of god fearing murderers, rapists, and robbers into muslim terrorists now can we?
Ironbite-the odds of that happening are lower then the detainees getting raped for dropping the soap.

Ironbite-the odds of that happening are lower then the detainees getting raped for dropping the soap. As low as the odds are, tho, it has happened to where inmates have gone to jail and come out worse because some of the folks on the inside taught them how to amp things up a little. So it's somewhat iffy on that point.

So it's somewhat iffy on that point. That's if we let them out. Obviously the people who are found guilty will receive life sentences or at the very least be released when they are elderly. And if they're innocent, well, we have to release them, if not here then their countries of origin. Of course some people have escaped from prison, but if we're talking about a Supermax Prison, then the odds are definately in our favor. Here are some of the more dangerous prisoners we have in ADX Florence: *Wadih el-Hage: Former al-Qaeda member who participated in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in which over 200 people were killed and over 4,000 were wounded. *Matthew Hale: White supremacist and former leader of the World Church of the Creator (a.k.a. the "Creativity Movement") who declared his race is his religion. Convicted for soliciting the murder of Judge Joan Lefkow. *Theodore Kaczynski (a.k.a. "The Unabomber"): Environmental terrorist who sent bombs through the mail which killed three people and maimed several others. *David Lane: White Supremacist leader of a group known as "The Order" whose members were found guilty of murdering Jewish radio host Alan Berg in 1984. Now deceased. *Zacarias Moussaoui: Conspirator in the September 11th, 2001 attacks. *Timothy McVeigh: Domestic terrorist and perpetrator of the Oklahoma City Bombing. Deceased. *Terry Nichols: Conspirator in the Oklahoma City Bombing. *Ramzi Yousef: al-Qaeda member and key planner in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. *Dwight York: Child molester and black supremacist leader of the Nuwaubians. *Michael Swango: Former surgeon and serial killer who poisoned at least three patients. *Robert Hanssen: Former FBI agent who sold classified secrets to the Soviet Union. Serving a life sentence for espionage.
