[Kinda like Red Wing's games, no one really knows why, it just is]
As a lifelong Red Wings fan I can explain this. It comes from the Original Six days for the NHL when only 4 teams made the Stanley Cup playoffs, and 8 victories were needed to win it. The octopus with its 8 limbs represents two 4 game sweeps to win the cup. Hence the tradition, started by Pete and Jerry Cusimano on April 15, 1952, [in which the Wings swept their way to the Cup] continues in Hockeytown to this day.
